Oil leak When the truck is running, the oil leaks badly. In 2 days of normal driving, the oil went from full (5 qts) to below the operating range. When I first noticed the problem, I was driving on the highway and saw a very small amount of smoke that was barely noticeable. I could not tell where it was leaking from, oil was all over the undercarriage. It does not leak when it is not running.

It calls for 4.5 (4 1/2 ) quarts with a filter change too. After you change it and add the oil start the car and let it run for about 2 mins. to let everything circulate and then shut it off and check the oil again to make sure that it is still full and that there are no leaks. turn the ignition to the ON position and do not start the engine
Next you should hear the fuel pump run for 5 seconds
If not the engine oil pressure sensor needs to be replaced which has a circuit to the fuel pump to run it till the oil pressure is at normal operating range

The only liquid that can be getting into the crankcase and mixing with the oil is engine coolant. This is caused by a bad head gasket. Driving the truck as it is will cause serious engine damage. Have it looked at by a professional mechanic before driving it again.

I just bought a 2005 envoy too. I read in the manual that the 4.6 6 cyl engine needs 7 qts total. 2 Over the normal oil change. Is it possible it wasn't low to start? I noticed when Walmart changed the oil they charged extra for the change because it needed the two extra qts. However my dip stick has oil over the full mark. Seemed strange but I haven't had any leaks and after 3k mile no change in level. Make sure you had the correct about the first time.

Yes there is. if it leaks, find out where. You may have engine damage from running the car out of oil. You say it leaks from the oil pump, same as before? was the oil pump replaced? Sounds like a pressure fed leak, so it should be easy to find.

the head gaskets are blown you can believe that anytime on any engine gas or deisel that you get oil in the radiator and there water/ antifreeze in the oil pan the gaskets and or cylinder heads are bad

More than likely it takes 4.5 quarts or possibly 5 with oil/filter change. But to make sure there is an easy way to find out. Park the vehicle on a level surface. Drain all the oil out and change the filter. Now pour in 4 quarts of the correct weight oil, and start the engine. Let it run for 30 seconds and then shut down for 30 minutes. Check the level of the oil and add as necessary to fill it up. Probably wil take 1/2 or 1 quart. Warning: Do not overfill!

do you know how to check the oil? With the engine off, open the hood locate the dipstick, usually yellow in color and often says oil on it, pull it out, wipe it off, put it back in, pull it out adn look at the end, it will have an area that is checkered, if the oil level is between these marks, it is in a good operating range, if it is overfull you should have some drained out, if it is not full add 1 qt at a time until it is in the checkered area. if the engine is knocking, you should not run it have it towed to a qualified service station. 5 w 30 is fine and 5.5 top 6 qts should be plenty. hope this helps.
