The speedometer in 1995 jeep grand cherokee doesn't work all the time. My friend started it up last night and drove off with it cold and she said that the speedometer stayed at 0 for about a mile and a half then bounced a little and then started working. what would cause this.

your speed sensor is on the side of the trany just go to you local parts house and look at the sensor you'll find it . it's realy that simple . hope this has been helpful to you !
Sounds like the speedo sensor needs to be replace on the transmission. I've had a similar problem with my Jeep with the sopeedo not working then work after the tranny heats up then after a period of time the needle started to jump when at 100 km or 60 mph. I changed the sensor and the problem went away. Good luck!
The vehicle speed sensor and speedometer are one in the same on this model I believe. If one goes out it takes the other with it if its all electronic and not cable driven.
12 is a battery disconnect within the last 50 start cycles and 55 means the end of the diagnostic cycle. Basically the computer found nothing wrong. The 12 code may seem incorrect if you haven't disconnected the battery recently, but from my experience the 12 code shows up almost all the time regardless.
