I have a 2001 Saturn SL. I am having some problems with the car running hotter than normal. It is not over heating, but is not running as cool as it was. The temperature gauge use to be around the "quarter" mark, now it almost at the "half" way point. I have had the cooling system flushed and the coolant replaced, changed the thermostat, and changed the coolant temperature sensor. I changed the sensor because I noticed that the cooling fan wasn't turning on. So I tested the motor on the fan and found out it wasn't working. I then replaced the motor. The fan is working, but the engine is still running hotter than normal. I don't know what else to check. Could it be the water pump? Radiator? Please help me with some suggestions!!!

I would say that the rad is the problem once a battery or rad gives you a problem after 5 years got rid of it ..I have talked to a Saturn dealer years ago.and most saturns run warm. And they use organic stop leak from the factory.because of the (popcorn)cast block.

try to run the water pump without hoses, and add water in the 'in' side, if is powers out the other side, then it's fine. how is your water/coolant mix?

SOURCE: Engine runs hot on 2001 Stratus R/T 3.0L V6

Hello, as previously suggested by my collegue it appears you have an air lock. Have you tried parking the vehicle on level ground, from cold with radiator cap off start the car and leave it idling. Make sure the fluid/coolant levels are o.k. and let the engine reach operating temp. Keep some warm water handy and watch/listen the water/coolant system (Keep a safe/sensible distance from radiator) hopefully after a while the system will bubble and boil up let it settle for a few seconds and then top up with very warm water do this until it hopefully stops belching out of radiator. Replace cap and hopefully top and bottom hoses will be warm. Oh! nearly forgot keep all heater controls on hot with blower on full..(Inside the vehicle)
Finally I'm not joshing but is the thermostat in the right way round and functioning correctly? to test drop it in some boiling water it should open almost immeadiatly.
sorry for the epic but I'm here to help and hopefully save you time and money.
Good luck and a Happy New Year to you and your family!

SOURCE: check engine light is on and the temperature gauge stop working.

First, make sure that the temp sensor is plugged in and working. If not change it. If problem persists, check fan relay and sensor. It is doubtful that the problem is the thermostat because if open the fans would never come on (running too cold) and if stuck closed you wouldn't have to wonder if it was overheating... (would be blowing antifreeze out everywhere)

SOURCE: 1997 honda civic over temp. Have replaced

Generally if one hose is hot, and the other hose is cold it indicates that they water is not circulating. You could have a defective thermostat. Take the thermostat out and run the engine without it. With the radiator cap off you should see a lot of water moving through. It that is the case, replace the thermostat and you should be ok. If there is no rapid movement of water it may be the impeller on the water pump came loose. This is rare, but it can happen since the impeller is usually pressed on the shaft. You should also check and see if you get a lot of bubbles when the car is running and the cap off. This often indicates a blown head gasket. Hope this helps.

I have a 96 sl saturn. takes half an hour for my car to reach running temp. When i start driving the engine cools down so far, to the point i have no hot air for my heater. I replaced the thermastat, i...

replace the thermostant again this time get a hotter temp thermostant and buy it from the dealer, the other thing is that these cars are known for the temp sensors being bad this would give you the false reading on the gauge but would not affect the heat, if its taaking a long time then i would replace the stant and this time or before replacing the stant i want you to flush out the heater core, remove the hoses from the heatercore and use a water hose to flush water through the heater core, a plugged core will not throw heat or will start to allow water to flow when it gets good and hot to flow through the retricted core due to rust and crud, try the flush first and then try a new temp sensor if the flush helps the heat, hope this is helpful good luck.

My car is overheating when idling and when I start to drive it cools. It does not cool when you turn the heat on.

Check to see if the fan on the radiator is running? If no check the fan operation. If yes check to see if the radiator fins are plugged with dirt.

I have a 1993 Saturn SL that the service engine soon light comes on after driving at highway speed for 3 or 4 minutes. It goes out after not maintaining hiway speed. When I go to check for codes the...

It seems like it almost has to be one of two things. Either it's getting a little hotter than it thinks it should or it thinks it's not getting the right air fuel mix at those speeds. If, after slowing from hwy. speeds, the light lingers for a little, then goes out, I'd investigate option 1. If it goes out pretty much as soon as you let off the gas. Option 2. If you're pursuing the heat issue, flush the radiator thoroughly. Make sure the fan is working right.
Engine lights can be finicky. If the car runs fine and doesn't seem to be having any problems other than the light, it might be nothing important.
