Drain water out of engine . remove the rocker cover . remove the rocker shaft and rocker assembly . lift out the push rods ( check if rods are the same length and if not check that you keep them in the right sequence for reassembly) . remove inlet and exhaust manifold . Undo the head bolts and lift off the head. Search the web for the manual or cruise the used book shops/ libraries for the manual as you will need it for the settings and torque specs.. Austin engines had little change between vehicles up to 1964

Most of the time this is due to the pistons in the CV carbs not rising with the increase in intake vac. Clean your carbs and this allows the carb pistons to rise with inflow allowing a richer fuel flow.
If that doesn't help, read your plugs. Are they burning a light tan? If not, you may have some compression/valve problems. Do a compression test on each cylinder, Should be over 100psi straight across +or- 10%. Great Car....happy motoring.

Can you tell if you are loosing spark to the plugs or if the fuel in the carb is boiling ?

YOU dont need a diagram for twin carbys as put them on the manifold back off all throttle linkage and adjustment screws make sure thay are all down, and turn both screws down till they touch, now back off the jets nuts under the carbys and then undo them 2 turns only[thats the ones the choke move up and down] now HB on out of gear a little choke start engine adjust 2 screws 1 more turn each and choke in
make sure you have very thin oil in pistons, then when running adjust jets 1flat at a time when it runs smooth lock up the linkage and adjust screws till idle at 600 RPM.

I would be looking at the gear leaver through to the gearbox because it sounds like play in the gear selector linkage, and I would expect to find considerable wear in it by now.

The best way to adjust the timing on this ancient vehicle is to have a servicing dealer do it. Due to age, wear and tear etc, it will not respond to factory specifications.
