94 volvo 940 gl

The 94 volvo gl I am looking at buying has had the upper engine rebuilt; the head gasket warped, so everything was replaced. The odometer has been tinkered with, and I am wondering if that is a big deal? In '03 it had 211,000 km's; in 05 it had 191,000, and in 09, it has 209,000.
I am not sure if the odometer has been replaced or not and don't know what to look for...
Any suggestions and/or advise?

Where is my cooling fan relay located on my 1992 Volvo 940 gl?

Cooling fan relays are usually located under the hood in the engine compartment in the black box with all of the fuses. On the under side of the box cover it will usually give a drawing of the fuses and relays and the position they hold in the box.

My engine ran hot, now i am told i need a new head gasket or a new engine?

unfortunately this is probably correct if the car got very hot.
most new cars have alloy heads and if the car gets too hot due to cooling problem the head can warp.
a new head gasket and having the head skimmed flat again is one solution, the other is a new engine.

if you want a second opinion then most garages will be able to do a pressure test on the cooling system which would confirm a blown head gasket

I just bought a 94 940 turbo 132 K miles.runs greatit sat for 4yrs!But aftre the oil was changed it started to smoke alotit also has alot of back presure. Also has alot of smoke coming out of oil filler...

yes, volvo,s have a problem with this, remove clean and reinstall the pcv filter or replace it,excessive crank case pressure can allso lead to blowing engine seals and gaskets.

Considering buying a 94 volvo 940 gl

Hello, it sounds as if the person had an issue with the head. There is no mention of pistons, rings, connecting rod bearings, engine main bearings, oil pump. These are parts to an engine overhaul. It sounds as if they had maybe a timing belt to break and may have bent valves or either the bolt that broke off required them to pull the head off the engine to have bolt drilled out. Please rate my answer, Thank you.

Buying a '94 Volvo 940 GL auto

Hi!

Im from the "land of volvo" sweden, and ive worked as a mecanik for 8 years, and i have NEVER ever had a customer who serverd his/her car every month, and never ever have i heard anyone else sya that they had. So maybe that woman had her car washed every month, thats normal...but she dident had the car on service every month, thats overkill so to say. Once in a year or every 20 000 kilometers is the normal service intervall. And the big sercice is when the volvo has run 140-150 000 kilometers. And thats the expenisve big service when you get a lot of parts replaced on the motor. Otherwise the normal service once a year or 20 000 kilometers is changing oli, changing filters, check on the breakes, check the tires, check the lamps etc.

I hope this info is usefull for you
Good luck
Nic

BTW, Volvo is a very very good and trusted car and wonderfull to drive

Engine idles irratic

Did you have the head machined/shaved before you replaced the head gasket with a new one? If not--do over---machine head---replace gasket.

BUT, before you even bother, have you considered the fact that the BLOCK may be cracked? You can check this by looking at each spark (plug for combustion residue of coolant or oil) of each cylinder separately.

Need radio code for a 1993 Volvo 940 GL

I'm pretty sure that you can call any Volvo dealer and get the code...talk to the service manager.

You can pay for codes online but there is no real need to.

95 volvo 940 running rough

Have you checked compression on non firing cylinders? Likely has blown head gasket between these two cylinders if located side by side.
