I am changing the spark plugs on my 2004 Kia sorento

I am changing the spark plugs on my gas 4x4 V6 2004 Kia Sorento. Do I have to remove the throttle body to get at the middle spark plug on the passenger's side and if so, do I need to replace the gasket afterwards or can I reuse it?

I went ahead and did what I thought. Yes, you do have to remove the throttle body and have a new paper gasket ($3.84CDcad for aftermarket, $9.49cad at Kia). You also need to remove the brackets that support the intake manifold.

For the rear passenger's plug, you will need to disconnect the air intake(it's just a screw). There were several sensors that needed to be unplugged, as well as an air hose or two (they're secured with desert clamps - use a pair of vice grips). Remove the black template to expose the wires. Pull, then unscrew your spark plugs.

On the driver's side, two more manifold brackets will need to be removed and the cables to the throttle body will need to be unfastened from the top of the manifold and from the throttle body. More sensors need to be unplugged. Finally, you can remove the black template.

On the driver's side, things appear more sophisticated, but the actions are all the same.

    This job requires:

    ratchet
    10mm, 12mm, 15mm sockets
    10mm short-stalk combination wrench
    extensions of various lengths
    knuckle
    vice grips
a deep socket that fits spark plugs along with a rubber cup inside to grip them
thread-eaze anti-seize to coat the threads on your new plugs before installation
6 spark plugs to replace the crappy Champions that Kia puts as stock
    lint free cloth

Make sure all spark plugs go in as tight as the ones you removed. If you have never done this, practice with the old ones. When reconnecting your throttle cables, be sure the bottom one clicks into place. All your chambers and wires should be dry, if they're not, you have an internal problem. Dry the area with a lint free cloth and take note of which chamber it was.

After you think everything is together and you have started it up, if the engine light goes on, turn off the vehicle and re-check that all your sensors are secure and that your throttle cable is properly attached. If the problem persists, take it to Midas or an independant garage for diagnostics ($54.00cad as opposed to $175cad at Kia). If you can wait for delivery, home diagnostic equipment can be purchased on-line for as little as $45.00usd.

Don't be afraid of your Sorento.

This project took an astonishing 8hrs solo. The templates are the most frustrating part.

Be careful there.. If you remove the Throttle Position Sensor TPS or the throttle Cable, the engine light will come on because there is a certain setting that needs to be done to ensure accurate emission control.

I just put all 6 plugs and #1 coil pack in the Wife's car.. I found it easier to pull the battery and the air box for more room to work. I did have to take the Throttle body loose and fold over the top. Kia dealer wanted $695. and I have $220. invested.I have enough left over to take the Wife out to dinner and a Movie, Happy Wrenching.Jeff

How to replace spark plugs in a kia sorento

The 2006 KIA Sorento is a smaller SUV with a 3.5-liter V6 engine. This engine uses six spark plugs to run the engine properly. There will be three spark plugs on each side of the engine. All six spark plugs will need to be changed at the same time to ensure that all six are working equally. The spark plugs are in plain sight on the right and left side of the engine and have rubber wires connected to the top of each one.
  1. 1 Insert the edge of the spark-plug gapping tool under the meal arm in the center of the one of the new spark plugs and turn the gapper until the number .038 is in the center of the metal arm. Repeat this for all other new spark plugs.
  2. 2 Open the hood of the 2006 KIA Sorento and remove a rubber wire from one of the spark plugs. Use the ratchet and spark-plug socket to remove that spark plug from the engine.
  3. 3 Insert the new spark plug into the hole where the old plug was. Hand-tighten the new spark plug until you are certain it is seated properly, then tighten it further using the ratchet and spark-plug socket. Replace the rubber wire to the top of the new spark plug.
  4. 4 Repeat for all other new spark plugs. Once you have replaced all six spark plugs and replace the rubber wires to the tops of them, close the hood.

CAN/T FIND THE SPARK PLUGS ON A 03 KIA SORENTO

The 2003 Kia Sorento with V6 has the spark plugs located under black plastic covers in the center channel of each cylinder head. Several brackets, cables, and hoses must be moved out of the way to access them. The manifold air intake tube needs to be removed on the right bank.
The left cylinder bank has coil-on-plug assemblies while the right bank has more conventional spark plug caps with sealing assemblies. The coil-packs are held with two 10mm bolts each and are difficult to get to. Use universal-joint sockets and an extension.
