Problem for Toyota 1986 Pickup 4WD

New clutch slips when hot

By rainhollow on Apr 03, 2009

I have a 1986 Toyota pickup, had the clutch replaced about 2,000 miles ago. If I tow or use 4WD, and get my clutch hot, it slips. If I let it cool 10 minutes or so, it seems to do alright. Is it possible the mechanic didn't have the plate resurfaced before installing the new clutch? I have no way of getting a hold of him to ask him.

On top of all that, did you replace the front main seal on tranny? the rear main seal on engine? did they need to be replaced? the book shows a spring that attaches to the clutch fork to release it when you let off clutch pedal, also pulls back the throwout bearing from the pressure plate. Mine was missing on two trucks, '85 and '86.

lots of possibles here. Corrosion in the clutch master or slave cylinder could be preventing the piston to return to normal position after you release the clutch pedal so the clutch could slip until the piston eventually works back to normal. the pressure plate springs could be weak or damaged if the original plate was reused. The flywheel could be scored. The clutch hydraulic line could be pinched or damaged. If you have never replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders, I recommend you start there. You won't believe the sludge that can build up inside.
