The heat shield is there to allow air to flow around the starter to prevent the heat from the exhaust burning the wires in the starter motor. Mostly it will be a engineering fix because they didn't calculate the problems with hot starters during the design process. I am afraid that you are stuck with the fitting and space problems and now you probably know why it costs so much to have it done in a shop

1. you have to remove the possitive on the battery.
2. lift the truck on the passenger side. (remember to use jack stands for security)
3. remove the wires going to the starter. (there should be 2 wires.)
a) a thick wire, thats the possitive.
b) a thin wire thats the starter signal from ignition switch.
4.remove the bolts holding the starter, you should see them they are the only ones touching the starter base.
5.you can sheck if yours is good at anu(advance discount auto parts).
6.do the same steps from four to one to install the new starter.

iF U HAVENT FOUND IT YET IT IS LOCATED UN THE CONSUL. ITS A LITTLE BLACK BOX WITH 3 PLUGS IN IT

Drop the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump. Filter is attached to the fuel pump. Sounds like the fuel pump is failing.
