Most likely has nothing to do with no mufflers. u prob have bigger more obvious problems if u have to use starting fluid to start. how does the engine run while driving, and at idle after warm?

  • Anonymous Aug 06, 2013

while driving its very slow to gain speed, but does great afterwards. while idling at red light it often chokes out and dies, but will crank up immediately afterwards.

SOURCE: What is the distributor timing mark for 89 chevy

Is the vacuum hose removed from the dist when the timing is being checked?
Are you connected to the first plug wire (closest to the rad) on the drivers side?
If this is being done.....remove the cap and rotor and check the springs on the mechanical advance, the advance should be tight to the shaft and springs tight.
I would set the base timing on this set up .....at idle speed...... at between 5 and 10 before TDC.

Remember......timing marks on modified engines are not always accurate. Parts from this year and that year put together.

SOURCE: On my 1990 Camaro RS the starter is clicking while turning engine

Check battery condition. Sounds partly flat to me OR the earth straps that should be from starter to engine OR earth strap from body to engine is not connected properly.

Simply connect volt meter to battery earth and earth on starter and crank....if more than 0.2v then earth circuit is faulty.

Repeat as above but from +ve battery terminal to +ve on starter.....must be less than 0.2v or faulty wiring on this circuit.

SOURCE: i dont have power on a 89 camaro rs fuel pump

First of all you will only have voltage for 2 seconds after key is turned on from the fuel pump relay. after that when you begin to spin the engine over oil pressure then builds up and closes the contacts on the oil sending unit causing the fuel pump to stay powered up as long as it's spinning or it's crunk and running.
so while you check for power on the tan with white stripe at fuel pump , have someone bump the engine over, if you have power up until about 2 seconds after they let off the key then check ground to pump if it's ok then you'll need a fuel pump.
If you don't have voltage when it's spun over then check the red wire coming from the oil sending unit the same way you checked it at the fuel pump.
If you have voltage then check inline fuse beside the battery. if fuse is'nt blown then check for broken wire from there to fuel pump.
If you don't have voltage from red wire at oil sending unit then check for voltage on orange wire at sending unit, if you have voltage on the orange wire and not on the red wire while someone is spinning it over then replace the oil sending unit.
If you wanna do a quick check that makes sure your relay isn't the problem Go to your 12 way diagnostic connector under dash by stearing wheel. and touch a battery hot wire to pin G if relay is ok the you should hear the fuel pump come on.

89 Ford E350 Diesel - two problems 1) no power to instrument cluster, 2) diesel will not fire off without starter fluid...but the glow plug solenoid does click and wait light goes off

You should never use starter fluid when the glow plugs are hooked up. It can cause severe engine damage. You probably need to replace all the glow plugs and the glow plug controller.

91 camero rs starts runs 10-15mins and dies . Will not start again til cold a

Hello Ryan, start by checking the battery terminals and cables. The cables on these Camaros are known to corrode and cause intermittent starting problems. The next time it stalls & won't start, check for spark. If no spark, the ignition module, pickup coil, or ignition coil is likely the problem. This model did not have a crank sensor. If spark is present, check for fuel pressure. I hope this information is helpful.

Is the fuel filter ok? - fuel pump ok? Sometimes a new fuel pump is faulty. You may need to check your fuel pressure. Could even be a plugged fuel return line. PS be careful using starter fluid - it can be hard on an engine. Le t m e know. Thanks

92 RS Camaro, Replaced battery and now car has no power?

are your battery post bolts clean and tight, my 89 rs ran fine untill i decided i wanted shiny new battery bolts, when i put them in and tightened them down my car had no power at all, i checked how tight they were, and they were TIGHT so i wiggled the black cable and re tightened it and bam my lights turned on, tryied starting it, and it started, sometimes you just gotta make sure the connection is really good, not just how tight it is, also check your ground wires, there are a few but the main 2 are located at the front pass side next to the batt, and on the back firewall going from the bottom pass head to the firewall, hope that helps, if not comment back
