SOURCE: 1982 rabbit shift linkage

There is a plastic ball that is in the shift linkage that also wears and is usually not included in the shift linkage bushing kit. It is attached to a metal piece and is bolted to the shift linkage. This is generally the problem if you already replaced the bushings.

Sometimes the linkage is out of adjustment but I would make sure that the ball is not worn first. They generally cost $5.00 - $8.00 or so.

If you need to adjust the linkage you can try the following, but if the bushings or the ball is worn adjustment will not do any good.

There is an adjustment on the shift rod that goes from the shifter to the transmission. It is a rod slipped into a tube with a locking collar or clamp.

The way that I do this is to make sure that your vehicle is in 1st gear and then loosen the bolt on the clamp.

Make sure that the clamp is loose enough so that the shaft can slip in the tube. Put the shifter in the 1st gear position and then tighten the clamp.

You may need to fiddle with this a little to get it in just the right spot.

This is much easier if you have an assistant.

SOURCE: shifting cable/shifting linkage adjustment

Try loosening the nut for the cable. Shift into park from under hood. Put shifter in park and pull cable, push nut towards cable and tighten nut.

It's possible the rubber donut bushings on the shifter linkage underneath the car are worn or even missing. If they have been renewed recently then adjustment of the linkage was not done properly. It is a difficult and dirty job without a car lift.

Hopefully only your linkage, but may also be your throwout bearing going pain to change but with right tools couple hrs work might as well change clutch and pressure plate as well cause that\'s a usual if changing bearing or clutch pressure plate needs to come off. But as I said I\'d check linkage first. Hope this helps

Why will my 2001 ford escape only go in reverse

does the shifter itself go thru full shift range? forward and back, but it will only catch in reverse? if so sounds like the linkage has loose bolt or joint. check your likage, underhood,(on column) and on transmission, likely cause is linkage plate on transmission (bolt is loose)

I have a 2001 Ford Escape (alternator just replaced) and as I was backing out of my parking space, and shifting into drive, the gear shift lost all tension and wouldn't shift. I turned off the engine....

seems like your shift cable is disconnected , you might have hit it when you were working on the alternator just go back and re-trace your steps

Gear Shift not shifting properly

Depending on whether it is a column shift or floor, you have to get the linkage loose enough to get the car in neutral, move the selector back to the proper setting, and tighten everything up.

If the car is not setting on a hill or incline, you should be able to move the shift levers by hand when you've loosened the linkage and move it until it is in neutral. Put on jack stands and chock the wheels that are on the ground.
