Question about Pontiac Cars & Trucks
2004 grand prix gt it seems to lag power I switched coils and plugs and wires nothing still sometimes while accelerating if I don't keep the gas pressed enough the car will **** and go to lower gear like it jumps back a gear or something? sometimes on acceleration car will shake shake for a second or 2 then go. also sometimes it wont go into the passing gear. the car has been like this sence I bought it so I don't know when it started or any detail like that.

It sounds like you may have a problem feeding the fuel to your engine, I had the same problem with my 89 RS. All the 1989 model's fuel systems were recalled. I think you may need a new fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank in the rear of the car right under the rear axle. The fuel pump itself isn't too expensive, but with other small parts such as the electrical harness upgrade and fuel filter and the labor you should be looking somewhere in the $500 range. thottle positioning sensor? if trans has overdrive could be a lock up piece, dont remember name of it. there is a lucas oil product that might help. if it is the overdrive.

Take your car to a dealer and tell them to "clean the throttle body" Known problem for this year. It will solve your issue.

The ECU controls all of that. When they start to go bad they do very strange things that are hard to diagnose. They run about $300 bucks of you do it yourself. They are simple to do. Shop around because it is an electrical component and many places wont warranty them but some places do if your lucky you can find one. I also would not rule out your timing or distributor. I dont know you or what you have checked but could be the rotor or could be carbon tracking inside the distributor. Even the slightest crack in the cap can mess everthing up.

If you have a warranty from your dealer, you paid for it, or whether it came with it, it doesn't matter, you MAKE them honor it. Take it back there, and MAKE THEM FIX IT! This shouldn't be your problem if you have a warranty. If they aren't honoring it, threaten them with the BBB or court. They will shape up.
I would say power steering pump.First check to make sure there is fluid in the reserve tank and at the proper level if not top it off and whine should stop.If level is correct then maybe try flushing with fresh fluid.
3.8L engine the power steering fluid was never toped/checked.. because it is a pain in the *** to get at (behind the hot as hell alternator), so it probably ran dry, top it up is probably all you have to do.. if the whining presists then you will have to try and bleed the air out by jacking it up, engine off, turn the wheel one side to the other about 25 times.. if that dont quiet it up then you will have to replace the power steering pump.
Power steering pump / fluid level is not hard to check - it is located below the alternator on the passenger side of the engine bay. You need a light to see it. You can get your hand down from the top of the engine to loosen and remove the cap/dipstick.
