Re: My car wont start the starter makes a hum noise but...
Take the starter off and have it tested-a free service at most parts stores. It is probably no good. A rebuilt starter from the store or even a used one from salvage should not be too costly.

The humming noise might be your cooling fan(s) coming on with the key in the "on" position. Check your battery connections for corrosion. Have someone jump the battery to see if the additional amps will turn the starter. Sounds like a bad starter though. I would need to know the year, make, model to be more helpful.
If the starter does not engage you will hear the "growling" in the cab which is usually the fuel pump and is a normal noise, more apparent because of the lack of engine noise. First thing to check is the wiring to the starter under the hood. If it is ok could be contacts in the starter solenoid , starter brushes or a"dead" starter. I would try tapping the starter with a SMALL hammer or the end of a I/2 inch breaker bar while having an assistant turn the key to attempt starting. Stand on driver's side, If spare is mounted under hood, remove spare. The starter is visible and can be tapped from there.
humming could be the motor turning round but not engaging with the flywheel. you can check this by hitting the starter with a spanner a few times. if it starts up after you have a sticking solenoid. had to do this a few times my self to get engine started. replace starter as soon as possible if it works. usually happens if you not driven car for awhile.. or you do a lot of starting and small trips.
I would need to know where the noise is coming from. The starter could have failed, or you could have a bad connection between the starter and the battery.
The humming noise you hear is the fuel pump. It is probably your starter soleniod. If you hear an electric click under the dash near the steering column when you turn the key then the ignition switch is ok and your starter needs to be replaced. This happened to me last month.
