Is the starter motor on a Citroen Saxo (South Coast model) 1999 ruined or is it something else?

chances are that the plastic portion(electrical) of the starter switch is cracked and jamming in position . probably caused the bendix solenoid to burn out thru constant voltage feed. I would either have the starter rebuilt completely or purchase a complete rebuilt to install.

Have a grinding sound when driving. Replaced bearing and cv joint, and calipers. Still doing it

Any possibility you replaced the wrong part because you are on the right track- - perhaps issue was on other side.. Maybe you can go up some hill and coast down in neutral to see if the noise is coming from a transmission component. If noise absent while you coast that is a clue.

Should I replace water pump?

Hi Fred:
Tricky question.
Personally, I would happily head out on my trip.
That said, depending on the mileage already on the vehicle, and the maintenance history, I would be checking the tires and brakes, check ALL fluids, doing an oil change, and replace the air cleaner and wiper blades.
Coast to coast is really less than most yearly distance traveled so It's the adventure to consider.
Cheers, and enjoy.

Won't start

so stop guessing, buy an $10 voltmeter (walfart has one)
and do simple tests. all very easy, ask.
the first step is jumper cable starts, ! cranks/ pass/fail??????
my guess, this fails.
if my car dont jump start, (i can coast start my car)
i check battery voltgage, alhhhhhh 12.6vdc, good. 10v bad.
i then hot wire the starter solenoid.
dead, (or clicks) , starter bad, big cables to it bad,(x2) or engine seized. (or battery bad, blow 10v cranking is bad battery 99%
i hand turn engine by hand, it dont turn, it's seized.
it turns by hand; good.!
so lets say the hot wire test works (keys in pocket cranks but dont start now , because my keys are in my pockets for safety)

that means the KEY LINE Is dead (small wire to starter solenoid)
see here. works for all cars. (not hacked key lines, etc.)

Coast of replacing a starter

The BMW/Bosch starter costs about $175, or $275 from the BMW dealer. You didn't say which engine you have in your 5, but this is generally not a simple job on any 5 series engine
Whichever version you have, you should estimate at least $350 in labor, maybe as much as $750

Your timeing is off. You may need to take it in and have a timing belt replacement. Does it kickback on the starter when you start it? if so it is your timeing.

Engine will not turn over the first time in my 1997 Saturn SW2

when you say it revs and revs i assume you mean the starter when you turn the key,if so it sounds to me that your solenoid in the starter is not always engaging properly,so yes i would go with a new starter. good luck
