Question about 1996 Geo Prizm

I have a condition in a 1996 geo prizm 1.6L where the car starts but will not run more than 2 seconds. At that time, the fuel pump relay is open. The diagnosis is either a bad distributor or a bad ECM. I want to test the output of the pick up coil in the distributor to see if it is out of spec. Is there any way to test it?

The Prism is actually a Corolla, so you can use info for either model. You should have a main or EFI relay that powers the computer and the fuel pump relay. The engine computer powers the pump relay if it sees oil pressure or RPM.
Have you checked the EFI relay and the pump relay for power, and will the engine run if you bypass either relay ?

you'll have to pull off the interior panel. window in the up position. on the lock cylinder there is a clip that you have to pull off and an arm that actuates the lock. pop the lock out. reverse to install.

use an electrical tester with a sharp point tip, and poke through the coating into the wire at every 5".

this is the best wat to test the wiring.

Well if there is no electricity at the pump, it means either the pump isn't good or it could be somehting simple 2. Like a fuse blown

I think it is under your rear seat cushion. Remove the rear seat cushion, you'll see the gas tank cover.

The location of the fuel pump reset button on a 96 Geo Prizm if it has one.

No fuel pump reset switch. There are two relays that need to be energized to turn the fuel pump on. The EFI relay in the under hood fuse / relay box . Plus circuit opening relay . If the EFI relay is working you can test for B+ voltage at pin 12 at the DLC - data link connector , do you know what the DLC is an where it is located ? The circuit opening relay is located under the center console .
Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the center console. Remove the circuit opening relay (1) electrical connector. Remove the one bolt and circuit opening from the I/P bracket.
It look's to be on the right side support bracket under center console .Do you know how relays work ? You can go on you tube an check out videos on how to test relays !

why not post symptoms.?
what engine, 1.6L or 1.8l or? 4a or 7a toy engine.
there is no such switch.
its really Toyota Corolla.
my guess, it dont start? or dont crank
and you didnt check fuses first.
and the CEL dont glow key on
or you failed notice the immobolizer is active?

the fuel pump relay has 2 coils,
one for PCM control
and the crank signal.
there is no inertial switch
i looked at at a 1.8L.

post sympotoms and i can work it to the cause
it only takes a $10 voltmeter, to fix most problems.

no start? stalls? what?
checked fuel pressure cranking, did you, and below 30 PSI?
did you know that 1/2 the cars EFI made do not make fuel pressure
just key on but must be cranked, or be running, (crash and burn protection that, the smart engineers........)
if i had and old car like this (and do) (i have many and restored, 10x that)
id buy the FSM, or get the login
at the least.
i would , as id bet there are lots of other issues with this old car
never seen one that didnt.
the real issue with GM /Geo bs, is GM changes the colors of
wires on their, 1/2 Corolla car, Geo-ized, i call it.
if you love the car and love to fix it "DIY" and want ALL the facts
this is the book to have.

i feel sorry for Geo owners and try to help more..

95 geo prizm wont start

wont crank or will not start.? 2 unique things. no crank always results in , no start (unless you push start the car)
hot wiring the fuel pump relay or any relay in the EFI system , invites
blowing the ECU to kingdom come, bad to the bone that.
I fixed them for 50 years. (electronics controls, so know it !)
you do know its really a toyota right?
what ENGINE? each works different.
my prizm text dump.
joint venture, GM/toyota with 3 engine used.
1.8L or 1.6L
toy engine, 4aFE, 7AFE or 4AG
open hood look
or use the GM RPO tag
or Use the VIN to find motor used.

does car start with test fuel and run, until the fuel runs out.
do you have fuel pressure, while reading the FSM , way of doing it.
some cars only make fuel pressure, cranking and runing.
other make pressure, for 3 seconds key on, and cranking and running only, and all cars drop pump and injections when ECU sees spark die.
that is why stating which Toyota engine YOU HAVE, helps with diagnosis. and please stop hot wiring your car and learn to use a voltmeter. Ive seen $3000 ECU blown up do to bad mechanics.

Toyota corolla 1995 1.6 liter where is the ignition relay located

but most cars of this early years.
its called the MAIN relay,
this is and EFI car, and the ECU runs the show.
on most these cars main powers up the ECU and Ignition
there may be 2 fuses.
most main relays are next to the ECU.
starting in 1996 most of this changed,
some cars changed 1 year early, or mid year. so VIN codes. may be the only way to work on any 1995 , in USA> . Hint?

Where is the emergency shut off in a 1995 geo prizm?

All cars, EFI. (some have 3 fuse to operate ECU/spark/ fuel) check em yet?
check power to pump 12v cranking?
no, ? 12v, or 6v? (6v or near is corroded wires /conns)
check power (12v) from fuel pump relay cranking, got 12v there.
if yes , the the path is broken to the rear ) (inertial switch?, not in 95)
if not,12v now, the FP relay is bad or ECU is not turning it on.
if 12v is across the FP relay coil the ECU is working.
if 12v is across this relay, and output is dead, that is a bad relay
or the FI use feeding it is blown.
btw #1 all cars cut fuel (INJ) when spark is detected bad. (ecu)
btw#2 some (software) cut the fuel pump for same reasons.
btw#3, most cars, only activate the FP relay for 3 seconds key on, each time. and some cars only cranking, and running.
all these facts, need to be known to make progress, in EFI.
and more.
