Question about 1998 Honda Accord
Hey there, Ive got a 4 banger 98 accord with a few transmissions changed out so far along with a few engines. The car will start and when put into drive the D4 lights and blinks green. It will drive forward but hesitates and sometimes the engine just dies. Ive bought a new filter (tranny) and fluid, along with the 2 solenoids for it. Not sure if its worth messing with if the tranny is just trashed and needs a new one. Im gonna start tearing into it soon, I guess... Its all i know how to do. But any advice or transmission diagrams / how to check for codes manually without having to put a computer on would be great. Thanks
This is a TCM (tranny brain) operated, A/T
so scan it, in this old car , it either scans with the PCM or
has its own blink codes, the TCM.
D4 means, TCM is Unhappy, please scan me for lastest news !
the engine too, is bad. but id fix that first because the tranny brain
uses,. 4 engine sensors to run'
so scan the PCM (engine brain) first. fix that first.
alldata.com has all this.. every word every step.
why not read that.?
connect scan tool $9 tools work, and scan the PCM. (ask)
get all DTCs (errorrs) and most them,, here ill also lookup
how to scan your old TCM now.
here is lots for free books on this car.
the PCM when scanned will report 10 unique DTC errors
for the transmission.
and VSS, ECT, TPS, and CKP sensors must be good or
the tranny will fault.

is it manual or automatic. If automatic bands might need adjustment. If manual maybe the clutch disc is not good does she smell like if something is burning when car is running

I don't know if this will help but I 'll give you my experience .... I have a 90 accord ex 2.2 l ( love these hondas) and my s light kept flashing .... I bought a book , took it to honda of fife they said i needed a new computer 750 bucks yaeh right....... I did some tweakin under the hood and found a broken transmission solenoid sensor wire and fixed that and noticed my tranny fluid level was a quart over full, so i drained some out.... used an ohm reader and found one faulty temp sensor of 4 or 5 , changed that (the main one for the fans) anyhow I am almost certain all my troubles stemed from the computer getting the over full signal or the faulty tranny solenoid reading..... now everything is top on it .... but before the computer kept me locked out of half of my tranny, ...........

good question. what i would have to tell you is to have the car checked again to make sure that you get the same code than i would see if there is any warranty on this if not you will have to have a repair shop perform the repairs You might be able to get the part from autozone or cragen that will save you some money there
best regards mike

SOURCE: My D4 light is blinking
The blinking D4 light indicates a transmission problem. If someone installed the trans and engine for you, bring it back to them to determine what the problem is, as it should be under some type of warranty hopefully. If you did the swap yourself, I would scan for codes (free service at parts stores) to see if any come up. Last, you could try disconnecting the neg. battery cable for about 10 minutes, reconnect, which should reset the computer and the light should go off. If it comes back on, there is some kind of problem still.
