Question about 2003 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

We recently bought a 2003 Explorer (4WD) with 180k miles on it. After starting it, (about a minute or so in) it begins to make a loud clicking/knocking noise. The oil is fine and while I can hear it with the hood up, it seems to be more prominently heard when I walk around to get in. As though maybe the noise is coming from the mid-section of the car. My VERY ignorant guess is that it sounds like a belt of some sort but I just don't know where to begin or what to expect.

There could be quite a few different things that could/would cause that sound. Since you have stated that it is more prominent when you get in, it would lead me to suspect an exhaust leak, either at the exhaust manifold, or at the donut gasket (that is where the exhaust manifold connects to the exhaust pipe). If you take you vehicle to an exhaust shop, they can and usually will check it for free. FYI, if it is not the exhaust making the noise, you are looking at a more serious issue. Let me know how it goes.
I hope that you have found this information to be useful, and if I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. Thank you for using fixya!

SOURCE: Loud engine knocking on 2001 Ford Focus

Sounds to me like a very common problem has occured to your neighbor. If this is a SOHC engine, one of the valve seats in the number 4 cylinder has fallen out. I'm sure it has damaged the head and the piston. Stop trying to run it or you might blow a hole in the cylinder wall or break a rod or both.

SOURCE: Ford Escape engine light on/blinking, faint knocking noise

If your check engine light came on when the problem occurred, then you need to have the diagnostic codes read. I am cheap, so I would suggest going to an Advance or Auto Zone, they will read the codes and interpret them for you in hopes of selling you the part that will fix it. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!

Check for other loose heat shields.
The shield you removed would allow more noise to enter the cabin too.

Hi
Loud noise from Exhaust means your exhaust system is leaking.
this will make the performance poor on your vehicle.

Loud ticking noise under the hood of my 2003 ford explorer

if your lifters are sticking, you can try using MARVEL MYSTERY OIL. depending on the mileage and whether it's dual over head cam or over head valve ,their is a chance that a cam lobe could be worn or a rocker could be worn or slipped off. a lifter will collapes and some can even replaced without removing the head.

I have P0304 code, replaced the #4 spark plug which cleared problem in past, this code a appears very 3 months or so. "89 Ford Explorer "X" engine 180k miles. What should I look at next,...

so what is wrong with the plug when you replace it. is the plug wire OK? if the coil has weak output on that post for #4 it could cause that. I would replace the coil pack and plug wires, just to rule them out. With 180K I'm sure it needs the wires if they are original.

unhook the battery for about 5 mins. this will reset the powertrain control module (PCM) that would be a good start, is this a king ranch? or just a basic f-150?

The main relay also controls the transmission and will cause an intermittent interruption of power and indicates its going bad. about a $60.00 replacement cost. the relay is located under left side of dash.
