Question about 2002 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

Bonneville 2000 - Can I replace only the plastic part of the radiator? On the right side (far from resevoir) the plastic unit cracked, and i can't afford a whole new radiator. I JB welded the cracked piece, and it is working fine, not overheating.. i've left it in idle for over an hour and driven it for about a half hour. To my understanding, the only danger is that the plastic will expand and the epoxy might crack (this would cause an immediate gushing, because the broken off peice is a quarter inch thick.) Anyway, I kind of need the cheapest solution possible that is viable and sustaining. Otherwise, the car is parts. Thanks for any advice... i've only repaired things on cars, I've never had to deal with complicated parts, don't how to get them, and searching about this i'm not coming up with much.

sounds like your front end is worn out and yes tie rod ends are a common source of this problem along with out of balance tires and seperated tire cords, any tire store will inspect your car for free and give you an estimate to repair.

Do you did you take out the rad. or have a shop do it for you. Your problem sounds more like the rad is not the right size for your car. The difference is very slight. The rad for a 4 CYL And the 6 CYL look very much alike. they even interchange with one another. But if your car has the V6 and you are running a 4 cyl. rad you may run hot like this. Now if that is NOT THE CASE, IF THAT IS NOT THE CASE >. You still have air in the rad. Open the drain port a small bit remove the rad cap, start up the engine and let it run till it reaches temp -- tighten the drain port and refill the rad, and the overflow to full. try all that and God Bless.

transmission lines to radiator is leaking. The radiator will help cool the transmission fluid in most vehicles, and these lines can get crimped or become loose during normal vehicle maintence. Replace the lines and connectors, and recheck transmission fluid level. MIght just be a loose connection you could possibly tighten up. Busted or cracked radiator?

Radiator looks rusty what do i do

coolant inside looks rusty. IF the radiator has this color you have a leak because Bonneville radiators are aluminum with plastic tanks. Have the radiator pressure tested and see if is is leaking. IF not leaking just use the light spray setting on your hose nozzle and spray lightly to remove any dirt. do not run the fins or they will bend and impair the cooling ability of the radiator.

Look in the radiator to determine if the brown stuff is rust or oil. If it's oil then the head gaskets are blown and the heads will have to go to a machine shop to be ground flat. Do them both even if one side is ok, or the engine will never idle right. If it's just rust, install a back flush kit and blow out the rust. Turn the heater on when you back flush to get the rust out of the heater core. Replace the thermostat and anti freeze. Pressurize the radiator and make sure it holds. If the pressure drops off then look to find where the leak is (head gaskets)

My 1998 Chevy Silverado has coolant leaking from the radiator at the small metal fitting at the top drivers side of the rad. Is the a seal that can be replaced or does the entire rad need to be replaced?

There's not usually a seal for these, the metal is commonly molded into the plastic sides of the radiator.. Remove the radiator tube and inspect the plastic around the fitting for cracks. If you find cracks in the plastic, then you know your answer. If it's leaking from around the radiator hose you could try replacing the clamp with a hose clamp that you can tighten with a screw driver.

My guess is the plastic is cracked there, and the radiator needs replaced, but you should inspect it first of course.

Good luck

Where is the radiator drain plug on a 2002 pontiac bonneville

It should be located on the bottom of the radiator by the bottom radiator hose, if not there chk. other side of the radiator at the bottom its just a plastic button that you screw out, but it does not come all the way out.

Plastic radiator repair

I doubt you can actually fix it "yourself", but you can save lots of money by taking it to a radiator shop instead of buying a used or new radiator. They can replace the plastic tank for the bad side, but it is usually the drivers side because this is where the hottest water exits the engine and causes the plastic to crack. I removed the radiator myself and took mine to a shop and they repaired it for $40........cannot repair yourself because the tank has to be crimped on!!!! And radiator "stop leak" products will not work because they are for metal tanks!!!

There is a hose on the side of the coolant resevoir that has a straight blade screwdriver fitting in it. Open the fitting and this will bleed the heads on the LS. Without opening this you will never get the air out of the head, trust me.
