Question about Cadillac Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 1958 Cadillac that is original spec. The car was not driven for more that 14 months as I was busy getting engine spares from USA to rebuild the engine. After completing the rebuild the car was taken for a test drive. The gearbox was only shifting 1 and 2 and not engaging 3 and 4. I drove the car for about 1km and returned home. Do you think that being parked off could have resulted in sticky valve body etc, am I now to drain the oil and flush the gearbox and see what happens or should I drive further and see if it comes right?

If you go to a garage they will connect your car's computer to a code reader and get in return error codes that will tell you where to find the fault.
A defective alarm system can turn off the engine suddenly , in this case you will need to use the car key to unlock it.
Bad ECM module controlling electronic injection is a more common cause for car suddenly failing.
Check also that fuel pump is working and not making wird noise.
Check that air intake is clean and air filter is not too dirty.
Check that you have spark on all cylinder, also electronic distribution problems can cause the same.
You will getting more and definitive info by connecting car to a code reader.

SOURCE: I have a 1966 Ford Falcon with a C4 transmission.

I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.

Make sure your transmission gear position and throttle cable are adjusted properly. The rev of the engine and changing of gears needs to be coordinated between the two. Especially the throttle cable position. I believe theres a sensor which detects the throttle position which is cooridinated with the transmission shifting.

This depends on far too many factors, engine, transmission and brakes. It also depends on how well maintained the vehicle is. Lastly it depends on the speed linit where it is being driven.

MY TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING BAD AND THE FLUID IS FINE.NOT LOW AT ALL.WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE ?

This is an old car and the transmissions if driven hard will wer out in 140 thousand miles or less they never last past 200 thou. rebuilds in USA $1700 installed. Might take awhile as they may have to rebuild yours as they might not have this old of a unit on the shelfe ready to go. Junk yards around here*USA, Kentucky) get $500 for a used garenteed unit, but you might look alot to find one. again it's an old car and the parts are getting scarce.

Thank very much my friend First of all I am not living in USA I am living in Saudi Arabia, and I am proud to have known you guys. Sorry about my English but I am trying my best to explain the problem....

It sounds like you have a lifter knocking. It can be repaired from the top going through the valve cover. If its a sleeve on the crank shaft, yes, you have to go through the bottom of the engine block. Do yourself a favor, see different mechanic, and see what he says, not everyone in this business is honest. hope this helps

My 99 cadillac deville ran hot about 8 months ago i took it to the dealer thay told me that i need a new engine and to drive it for a couple days and see what happen i have been driving it for eight months...

If you have no obvious external coolant leaks then the most likely culprits would be leaking head gaskets or warped heads. I would take the car to an engine rebuilding shop and get a second opinion to the dealer, not to say that they are wrong, but your engine may be salvageable at a cheaper cost and those guys would be better positioned to tell you that. Hope this helps.

ENGINE REBUILD WARRANTY???

Sorry, most warranties only cover original repair and no warranty repairs after that. In other words warranty doesn't get a new start date. This is not what you want to hear but as I am in the industry that is the usual wayit operates... Unless you can talk them into extending another year or two....
