Question about Datsun 720

Open Question

I have a 1983 Datsun/Nissan 720 pickup/2.4L and it idles too high. If I push on the Fast Idle Cam, it will go back to a normal idle, but won't go back on its own. Is there a spring or something that might be bad? Something else?? I appreciate any help. Shops these days don't even know what a carburetor is so no help there.

SOURCE: Stuck on high idle

Check the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC) or the idle position sensor (IPS). They are located near the fuel system.

SOURCE: 1969 Datsun 1600 pickup Fast Idle

Could be the fast idle cam for the choke. When the choke is closed the fast idle cam holds the throttle open until the choke opens.
The cam should be on the opposite side of the throttle cable.

SOURCE: I have a 1984 nissan 720 pickup truck that i noticed idles high when stopped, then the idle goes low then high and back and forth. What is causing it?

Engine stalling and rough run issue at low speeds

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

Is there an on line spark plug diagram for a 1983 nission pickup

Is that the engine with two spark plugs per cylinder? There is a good forum site for your pickup at Yahoo Groups. Look for Datsun 720 Pickups (your model is the 720).

1985 Nissan 720 ext. cab pickup problem

You need to adjust the automatic choke. Your choke may not be opening fully. There is a fast idle cam linked to the choke to keep the throttle open more until the engine is warm. The idle mixture screw is part 37 in the picture, but get the choke adjusted right first, and you may not have to adjust the mixture screw. See adjustment procedures at link beloe.
