I think you should OBD 2 scan and see if it is miss fire ign wires are usually bad this time of year! scan it before you guess that adds up quick$$$$$$$$

Some play is required for normal operation, it is called backlash, it is more likely that if there is excess play it would be a combination of ring and pinion backlash and transfer case backlash, without hearing it I can't say for sure if u have aproblem or not.

This may be due to needing a tune up...Plugs and Wires ...Spray the wires with a little bit of water in a low light situation,and see if you see or hear any kind of arching out...You may see little blue sparks jumping off the wires and if you do,the wires are bad...Just a quick way to check for bad wires...If wires are ok,Check to see how well the spark plugs look...
