When you say it's destroying the air filter---do you mean it's all sooted up ?? I am assuming that what you mean.
Try disconnecting the vacuum line at the egr valve and see if that helps.
But it sounds more like a plugged up exhaust system.Try disconnecting or looosing the flange before the cataylic convertor and then see how it runs.

There is a diode in most older alternators that when working properly put out the light u speak of. The guage has some age so - take ur truck to advance auto - auto zone or one of them - have them check the battery - if u had to get a jump and had a problem it might be time for a new battery. You don't say how old the battery or alternator is so have them looked at.
If the problem leaves you stranded again then you will know it soon enough. To avoid being stranded - buy a GOOD or BETTER jump box - in the winter u need this - -also you can for a short time - remove your battery and CAREFULLY hook your cables to your jump box - wrapping the POSITIVE cable in some kind of old rag [t shirt is good] put a little tape around it or otherwise secure it so it doesn't hit metal while your using it as a battery and this will get you home or to a shop.
