Are you getting power to the starter from the key switch thru the neutral safety switch ?
Can you turn the crank shaft by hand ?

It should be right off the transmission, usually where it meets the engine block.

It def sounds like a starter prob, if you have replaced the wires its more than likely the starter motor itself, also check the battery voltage

'88 Subaru GL AWD Turbo, Shift on the fly wagon, that will sometimes start and sometimes not. There are also power surges. I put a new cap on her and new wires and was excited that she had more...

First try a new fuel filter and check your air filter. Sometimes the ignition relay on those is intermittent too. You may want to check the timing also. It is ok to ****** the timing a couple of degrees and see if it runs better. The turbos on those cars can have issues too. take care and good luck.

After reconnecting battery starter system only goes click click click. 1988 subaru.

when the starter will only click it must be replaced.
Usually, the best choice is to take it to an auto parts store and turn it in on a rebuilt starter. J.

Turns over, has spark but will not fire up

The fuel pump is in the gas tank, you test it by hooking up a pressure guage to the fuel injector supply manifold, there is a port there that looks like a tire valve, you will need a fuel pressure guage, Kragen auto and other stores will loan these out, you can also open the gas cap and listen for a humming type noise when the key is first turned on, but the fuel pressure test is best.
