Question about Cars & Trucks

Open Question

I have a Peugeot 1007 sports 1.6 petrol engine. I have just returned home to Cardiff after spending a weeks holiday at Paignton. I had to call out the A.A. after my car started losing power and eventually came to a grinding halt. he did a diagnostic check which did not show any abnormallity, so he just took the plugs out and cleaned them, this at least got me going again, the car however was still losing power, and could only reach 50 mph on the motorway and struggled to get up any hills. eventually the engine warning light came on and stayed on, and also a warning ANTI POLLUTION FAULT! I would like to know if this is due to a Catalytic Converter fault, I traded in my DAIHATSU CHARADE for this car which is only 6 and a bit years old, and my old charade I had for over 16 years with pracically trouble free motoring, AND I NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER ONCE with that car. I have put a new set of plugs in, but this has not done anything to the loss of power, have you any suggestions what could be causing this problem. ------ Ron Cleverley.

SOURCE: I need to replace my mazda mpv catalytic

Ok the fastest way to solve weather it is the cats in the exhaust system is to take it too a exhaust specialist and ask them to do a exhaust pressure test. They should have all the pressure drop data there and can tell you if there is to much restriction in the exhaust, if there is to much chances are they will be the cats, usually the front one. Yep your dad is correct with his theory, but excessive overfuelling will also cause the cats to build up excess heat and start to melt, or fall apart. So get a good service when your able too, plugs/filters and oils. Yep your firing order is correct.

SOURCE: check engine light on

Diagnostic code produces P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold-Bank 1. Probable causes are listed as follows:
1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault,
4-faulty catalytic converter.

SOURCE: catalytic converter fault, air pollution fault, power drop.

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM or ECM,ECU), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems can and do cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms.
