This is caused by the interlock.
Most common causes are the brake light switch or the position switch on the transmission.
I experienced a similar problem, fixed it by simply adjusting the position of the switch, no problem since.

Why is it my truck will reverse, but when I put it in drive it takes some effort to get it to move forward?

Either you have a transmission issue, or perhaps you have a sticking emergency (parking) brake. They will often allow reverse but impede forward motion. Be careful of that, since it can cause serious overheating of the rear brakes.

Cannot shift out of park

I had this problem with my grand marquis. it is a simple fix.
replace the brake light switch behind the brake pedal.
one way to drive with this problem is to turn key almost to the ON POSITION BUT NOT ALL THE WAY then put the car in neutral and then start the car and put in to drive.

Ford Excurtion will start normal, but stall when putting in gear (reverse) or braking. When re-starting it runns ok until next braking.

Have the catalytic converter checked at your local muffler shop...clogged...worn out...Hope this helps.

Are rear brakes in 2000 mazda protege self adjusting?

If the rears are not adjusted right, it could be a problem. And they should be self-adjusting, although often the adjusters get frozen from rust, corrosion, dirt. To adjust them, you drive in reverse and hit the brakes. Every time you do this the adjuster should click-it has made one turn on the adjuster's star wheel. Do it a few times: reverse, press brakes; reverse, press brakes. If brakes were too loose, and adjusters were working, the brake pedal may brake better now-pedal may be higher when brakes are pressed. If not sure, peel off the rubber plug on back bottom of brake backing plate. You should see the adjuster star wheel. Use a screwdriver and see if you can turn the star wheel either way. If still not sure, take the brake drum off, pull the shoes off, and take off the adjuster for cleaning. They are very simple devices, only a few parts to them. If they need cleaning to free up, do so. Then use some high temperature grease, very sparingly, on the adjuster's threads. Put them back on, shoes, and drums, then do the reverse and brake again to get them adjusted. Should work great now. When you pull the drum off, you can check if you need new brake shoes- not likely, but check.
Good luck.

If you have a motor mount going bad, are you suppose to be able to hear a noise of some kind?

Not usually. when a mount is bad, you can FELL the car **** when accell of a stop or changing from Drive to reverse. To check it, put on your parking brake, now hold the brake pedal with your left foot, now put the car in reverse, and press the gas slightly, the engine will move slightly, now put it in drive, the engine should shift slightly, if it moves a LOT like a few inches or moves upward, you may have a mount bad and it needs to be inspected.

When i put my car into reverse it feels like it wants to turn off & does not easily reverse

Check the engine mounts o see if they are broken. Prop the hood open and with the parking brake on and your foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal, start the engine and put the car in drive and rev the engine up while you keep an eye on the engine. Then do the same in reverse. If the engine jolts or jerks during the procedure, the mounts are more than likely in need of replacement and once the new parts are installed, the problem should no longer exist.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

Sheift lock

The term "shift lock" is the system that is in place to prevent the vehicle from being shifted out of Park into Reverse or Drive WITHOUT having the driver's foot firmly on the brake pedal. The brake light switch on the brake pedal closes a circuit that energizes a solenoid under the shifter. When the brake is applied, and the solenoid is energized, the shift lever is no longer "locked", and can be moved to the desired position.
The idea here stems from a phenonomon several years ago that dealt with the issue of "Sudden Intended Acceleration". What was happening here was, for some unknown reason, engines started developing high RPMS for no reason, and several accisents were reported due to this issue. The vehicle would accelerate "unintendedly", when putting into drive or reverse, and could hit something.
