I have a 1995 toyota camry 4cyl, my car is sputtering and has erratic idling when parked and it goes below 1000rpms, if I rev the engine over 5000rpms the cars idle goes back to normal, until i rev it again below 5000rpms. the car drives but as soon as i come to a stop it almost stalls out.

high idle on starting is normal as it is the same as a choke being on. When it drops back it should be around 900. However tacos in cars are not real accurate under a 1000 rpms so have it checked manually with a rev counter. Run the fault codes to check for a problem.

It can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related issues,---------------

SOUNDS LIKE A VACUM LEAK OR A HOLE IN YOU AIR INDUCTION TUBE ( BIG BLACK FLEX PIPE) BETWEEN MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND MOTOR

SPARK PLUGS AND WIRES AND DISTRIBUTOR CAP WET. WIPE DRY OFF THE DISTRIBUTOR. AND START ENGINE LET IT IDLE AND HEAT UP AND DRY OFF ENGINE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

4CYL or V6?? Clean/Replace your IAC valve as this will cause rough/erratic idles(may happen intermittedly). IAC valve motor possibly sticking due to dirt and carbon build-up. I also recommend a full tune-up, including air filter, and intake cleaning if this hasn't been done recently. Hopefully this helps....

The timing belt is one tooth off. Pull the covers back off, set the engine to TDC and recheck your marks, and make sure that the tension is correct.
