Question about 1997 BMW 5 Series
Very likely a stuck thermostat. It's an inexpensive repair (relatively). If you let the engine get too hot your engine will crack. Either replace the thermostat yourself or have it towed to a repair shop. DO NOT drive it when it's getting too hot.

SOURCE: BMW 528I smokes on start up
telemachas is totally correct with this type of car,also when pulling one of these engines apart i also found a lot of wear on the piston ring groves ,although rings were good the pistons themselves needed renewing .This would cause oil to be pumped into combustion chambers on initial start up.Problem was the cost of parts was more than the car was worth so customer bought another car as this one had been inported from germany and was so rusty as well it was just a scrapper and worst of all it had no air con

pop the door panel loose near the door lock actuator is at top of door;break the cover off of the door lock actuator.manually turn the actuator worm gear out of double lock with a screwdriver and pull the inside handle; not the easiest thing to do...good luck

have your charging system checked to make sure alternator is charging to specs, also make sure no light are left on, (trunk light ,glove box mirror light.it sounds like you may have a draw somewhere, may be alternator or something is on, hope this is helpful.
