SOURCE: Where is the crankshaft position

It is stuck in bellhousing of the transmission near the rear head. The new crank sensor will come with a piece of gasket paper on the end of the sensor. Install the sensor all the way in against the pick-up wheel. When you crank the engine the wheel will rip off the paper and the adjustment will be correct.

SOURCE: crankshaft position sensor location

Hello. One way to check if it is working is when you try to start the car does the needle move on you tac? If not then your crank sensor is more then likely the problem. It is located on the backside of the engine under the intake manifold. If is in about the center of the block. There will be a 10mm bolt holding the sensor in. If you decide to change it yourself (not to terrible of a job) unplug the sensor, remove the bolt and spin it back and forth slightly while pulling it out. It may be stoburn and you might have to work at it for a little bit (not a done of room) but it will come. When it's out the sensor will be shaped kind of like an L. I have changed a few of these over time and they can be a little stoburn. To install just reverse the process.

SOURCE: Crankshaft Position Sensor

The crank sensor is on the front of your engine behind the harmonic balancer. You will need a balancer puller for a 3.8 and a crank sensor alignment tool to do this lob.

Where is the starter relay located on a 1987 5.7l trans am GTA? I do not have the VATS system.

Has no starter relay , When you turn the key to the start position B+ voltage goes from ignition switch through the park neutral switch to the S terminal on the starter . They didn't have VATS back then . I was working at Pontiac dealer in 1987 . automatic or manual trans . If manual then there is a clutch switch not Park neutral switch.

Coil packs are replaced not repaired if found to be defective. ---prev.gif next.gif DISTRIBUTORLESS IGNITION SYSTEMS Starting in 1987, some models came with engines equipped with a Computer Controlled Coil Ignition (C3I) or Distributorless Ignition System (DIS). Fig. 2: Electrical schematic on C3I ignition system 86812031.gif Both DIS and C3I system consists of the coil pack, ignition module, crankshaft sensor, interrupter rings and ignition control module (ICM). All components are serviced as complete assemblies, although individual coils are available for Type 2 coil packs. 1987 GTA trans am TPI. it runs rough and rich. i let it run by itself and now it won't start unless i flutter the fuel pedel and then it still runs really rough and won't rev up. what can i look for?

I would suspect either the tps or mas air flow sensor, you can unplug the mass air flow sensor ( located in air tube to throttle body) see if this helps. The mass airflow sensor may need to be replaced. please rate if this helps

Crank sensor

If you have a 3.8 6 cyl, which most 94 Tran Sports have it should be located on the passenger side lower part of the engine above the crankshaft pulley and is mounted in the engine block.
