Question about BMW 528

Open Question

1982 BMW 528E turns over but won't stay running. Don't know much about cars so need some help in detail of what to look for or try. Not worth much, so not willing to put much money into it if it's something serious. Please help!

SOURCE: putting ignition switch back in a 1982 528e bmw

Hi There,
I would recommend you get the exact specs for that ignition switch. The problem is that if your car is already too old, you will have another issue coming up elsewhere. BMWs are usually made with a "road life". Once it has exceeded myriads of problems start to come up. When you fix one, another comes up. If you can, get a newer model.

Kind Regards,

SOURCE: I have a 95 BMW 318. The car will not turrrrn off.

The only way I can see you can turn this off safely is pull the fuse for the fuse pump. Its #11 7.5amp located under the hood up in the corner. Problem is your still going to be powered up like on accessorie position so you may want to unplug the battery. Be careful tho. You may have memory stuff that you need before you disconnect.

SOURCE: 1999 SC2 42K just bought

Hi, if it's intermittent, it is not serious. First check the plugs and change them if needed. If not the plugs, other possible causes are the ignition wire and a dirty injector. Run a can of injector cleaner thru the tank and if the problem continues replace the ignition wires. If it still doesn't resolve, I would replace the #3 injector. For more info on the code, please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6715318-causes_gasoline_engine_misfires. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

It sounds like your ignition module is starting to go bad. As it gets worse it will be harder and harder to start, until it doesn't start at all. Your crankshaft sensor could also be going bad. Hope this helps.

You will find it is an error in the way it has been put in or indeed faulty. Check your work and compare with the service manual.

Hi, if a 1982 Volvo don't start and don't even

It might not start because of a dead battery, starter. Altenators charge the battery. I wouldn't consider buying it, If I counldn't hear it run.

Do you spark at the plugs? Most likely crankshaft sensor needs to be replaced. Welcome to computer controlled cars. : (

1984 BMW 528e: Fuel is not getting to the injectors. I replaced the fuel pump in the gas tank (which was bad) but I am still not getting fuel pumped out. I followed the fuel lines and noticed some sort...

Correct me if I'm wrong but does your car have 2 fuel pumps, one in the tank and one in the line? I might be confusing that with a Volvo. Here's a link to an in line fuel pump for a 528e. Scroll down or search for 528e when you go to the website. THis page also has your charcoal cannister. Hope this helps. Good luck!

How do you get rid of the oil service light on a 85 528e series Bmw

To reset your maintenance reminder system (even if the light hasn’t come on yet), you’ll need to turn your key to on (but don’t start!) and make sure your odometer is on TRIP A. Then key off. Press and hold the Odometer/Trip button. While holding down on the button, key the ignition to on (Don’t start the engine!) The display panel will count down from “------“ to “-“Continue pressing the button until the Trip A is displayed. After this step, you are done.

My 1985 BMW got locked and it wont stay on

if this is a 1985 model car, then its pretty old...

i think you are saying that you crank it,it starts, then it goes dead over and over again?

or are you saying that you think the security system has disabled your engine?i have a '85 535i and a '84 528e i've had a different problem with the 535i and have just been driving the 528e.my point being that i cant remember everything about the 535i but i can look and tell you where everything is if you dont know or cant find out.

have you tried holding your foot down on the accelerator while you were trying to crank it?this shouldnt have to be done if your engine is repaired and adjusted properly, but you are just trying to see if it will run.

i dont think the security system would disable the engine like that as you say "locked" which could either mean the security system locked out the engine or that someone told you your motor is "locked up" and that cant be if it runs at all...

if it stays running with your foot on the gas a little then you will need some adjustment or some parts.probably a visit to a bmw shop.i was able to get both the 528 and 535 engine running smoothly with a flat head screwdriver and an allen wrench as well as doing some basic maintenence like changing the plugs, wires, rotor, cap, and oil,air and fuel filters(there are two filters on the 5 series bmw)without taking an 85 model car to the shop and paying a bunch of money to get it fixed, but thats not for everyone.good luck.
