Question about Cars & Trucks

My 93 cougar xr7 is acting funny for almost a year. Every mechanic I see says I need a new trans. I know that isn't the case. Because a bad tranny won't last as long as this one has. When I come to a complete stop it revs before accelerating, and the rpms rev as they please. A also to park it I have to leave it in neutral with the e brake on because it gets stuck when I shift in to paek

SOURCE: Auto Transmission 2000 Rodeo

It seems that the trans is slipping. The smell is from excess trans flood. If Trans is over filled, it can rupture seals and cause leaking that can get on the exhaust and burn.

The shift down linkage on the carburetor below the gas pedal cable might need to be adjusted to increase the hydraulic pressure on the internal clutch plates in the transmission it shows you how to do that in a car manual.

Hi Tom,Did you ever figure out what the problem was? My Alero with the same 3.4 motor is doing the exact same thing between 3000-4000 rpm while driving sometimes. Mine won't rev in park over 4000 either, but I think they are all like this.

If a trans slips, then the new fluid makes
it worse or not useable

The engine light on my 96 merc cougar XR7 is on. Car shakes bad when i accelerate and engine light begins to blink. I'm embaressed to say my engine light has been on for sometime but was told it c

The check engine light needs to be addressed. Yes it could be a sensor but you need to know.
The light blinking means the problem is serious, such as a dead miss on one or more cylinders. The light being on means something is happening with the engine performance that could damage the catalytic converter.
Get the computer scanned - most auto parts stores will do it for free in hopes of selling you some parts. Once you have the codes research them online or here.

2002 Durango transmission sluggish when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. I was told that the Transmission needs flushed and new Fluid added

Usually if the trans is acting up new fluid isn't going to change a thing, that's usually a ploy to get you to spend some money, just what I have seen.. Q: does the trans act up more or less when hot or cold, if there is a difference with temp then changing the fluid isn't going to help you, but that's my opinion, I been a dodge tech for 17 years but anything is possible with cars......

I have a 97 mercury cougar 4.6L V8... the other day on the hey the car started loosing power and was runnin real sluggish... then started smellin rotten eggs... I replaced the cat converter last year......

Sure sounds like the same condition all over again...but it's only a year old or the car in good tune, gas mileage is good? Is it possible you got a poor quality converter to go bad so fast?
Normally, I would hesitate to offer this test, because I know how hard it is to remove exhaust pieces with rusted, corroded, hard set bolts and fasteners. But since it's a new cat, you could try and disconnect the exhaust before the converter, and run the engine to see if that was the problem.
Good luck. Hope you get it fixed.

It started about one week ago my 96 mercury cougar XR7 won't go over 35 mph it just revs to about 3000 rpm. I replaced the pcv and had a complete tune-up, also checked the transmission. What could...

If it revs up & doesn't go,the trans is slipping
& will have to be rebuilt

Not going over 35 with no trans issues would
be a bad exhaust converter (blocked) & or
a clogged gas filter

Tune-up is sort of a outdated term and never
is a cure for much ,unless you have ignition issues

Never have to replace any PCV Valves. Remove & clean
every 3 years

Need to change transmission fluid does touque converter have plug to drain

The torque converter does not have a plug. Unless your transmission is acting up you shouldn't try to change all of the fluid, and here's why;

To do it safely, you need to drop the transmission.
In modern times service shops use a vacuum to **** all of the fluid out. The concern with that is it can have a bad effect on warn seals and the like in the transmission. Infact, some of the smaller service shops have in their work contract that Once they complete the service, they do not guarantee that the car will move at all. And that is usually in the small print.

If you are just being responsible by doing maintenance on your transmission just remove the pan, clean the filter,or replace it, reinstall the pan, add new fluid.

I am not trying to scare you, I'm just being honest and speeking from experience.
Best of luck.

it is located under the dashboard against the firewall of the passenger seat. i recomend buying a repair manual from your local auto parts store before attempting as it requires draining, flushing, refilling and bleeding the cooling system as well as removing many other componets like the entire dashboard and thermostat
