Thanks to some advice I have fixed the problem with my Granada. The pipe work from the exhaust manifold to the inlet manifold has a short piece of plastic pipe which needed replacing. This seems to have done the trick.
I would like to thank you for running this site. Without it I would still be re-starting my car each time I stop at a red light!

the throttle body on the inlet manifold has to be cleaned and there is more than likely a vacuum hose broken somewhere on the inlet
