If everything you checked is working properly then it must be the fan motor. I'm sure you know it only turns on when a certain temperature threshold is reached correct? Checking because I've had people come in who think it should always be on.

you have a burnt fan relay...if it were my car i ould run a jumper to the fuse panel so that when you turn the key on the fan will also come on and run.its not hard to do and it will stop the car from overheating

SOURCE: can't locate the cooling fan sensor or relay.

the radiator fan relay is located behind and slightly lower than the r/f headlamp.best way to get to this is by removing right side of front fascia out enough to get behind it. this will give you acsess to the relay.i work at a jeep dealer and have done this many times.

If there are no other components on the circuit, then most likely cause is the wire is shorting out someplace. The wire insulation may be damaged at somepoint, and it is touching a grounded point in the circuit.

My car heats up in stop n go traffic. The temperature gauge can go as high as to the 'RED'. I adding water and coolant everyday. Are the fans supposed to come on as I am driving and the car heats up?


if you are adding coolant every day then you are experiencing coolant loss
could be from a leaking pump gasket , head gasket or other leaking item
have a compression test done to check for head gasket , cracked head
next have the cooling system pressure tested to find the cooling leak
lastly check the fan, fan relay , fuses and coolant temp sensor unit for correct operation

look at temp control switch that turns fans on its a sensor mounted on motor or close to fans

My cadi 1988 is running ruff and quit running feels like over heating but no leaks, just smells


REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.MAKE SURE COOLANT NOT LOW.IF ALL IS GOOD CHECK FOR LEAKING WATER PUMP WEEP HOLE IF LEAKING REPLACE WATER PUMP.MAKE SURE COOLING FANS RUNNING.IF ENGINE RUNNING HOT WHILE SITTING LONG TRAFFIC LINE AND COOLANT NOT RUNNING.CHECK COOLANT FAN RELAYS AND FUSE.IF ALL IS GOOD HOT WIRE MAKE SURE COOLING FAN MOTOR GOOD IF COOLING FAN DONT RUN WHEN HOT WIRED FAN MOTOR BAD.IF FAN MOTOR OKAY AND FUSE RELAYS GOOD YOU HAVE FAULTY COOLING FAN WIRING.YOU COULD HAVE BAD ENGINE COOLANT SENSOR OR FAULT IN ECM CODE SCAN TO CHECK THEM BOTH.CHECK ENGINE OIL.LOOK LIKE MILK SHAKE YOU HAVE LEAKING HEAD GASKET.IF OIL LOOKS OKAY.YOUR ENGINE BLOCK, RADIATOR AND HEATER CORE NEED FLUSHING.

97 transport 3.4 engine- New radiator, thermostat,temperature sensor, water pump and new low coolant level sensor. Temperature guage goes to 260 degrees but engine does not over heat. Bled air from cooling...


Check the operation of the cooling fans at the radiator. While idling disconnect the coolant temp sensor at the top left (drivers side) of the engine. It will be a 2 wire connector near the thermostat housing. When disconnected the coolant fans should come on immediately, if not you have an electrical issue with the relays or blown fuse. Check the fuses first in the underhood electrical panel. Next swap the cooling fan relay with an identical one next to it, if the fan works the relay is open.

yes, yes, yes, and also bad sensor(s) , timing/ ignition problems or clogged radiator fins, blown cooling fan fuse(s)/ relays plus other things. look for leaks first, then check fluid levels, see if the fan comes on (is fan belt good) then maybe tune-up

possibility of a bad head gasket. thats if the thermostat is good and the fan runs and fluid is full.

Over heating


CHECK COOLANT LEVEL IN RADIATOR. BUT WAIT UNTIL THE ENGINE COOL DOWN. CHECK WATER PUMP.IF YOU SEE COOLANT LEAKING FROM WEEP HOLE REPLACE WATER PUMP. REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP WHEN CAR OVERHEATING IF CAR AT A STANDSTILL IN LONG TRAFFIC LINE OR MOVING SLOWLY.COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR FAULTY.NOT TURNING ON COOLANT FAN.CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF ALL IS GOOD.HOTWIRE COOLANT FAN.IF COOLANT FAN DONT COME ON FAN MOTOR FAULTY.IF FAN COMES ON CHECK ELECTRICAL WIRE CONNECTOR FOR DAMAGE WIRES.

After the vehicle is running for an hour, the vehicle get hot and shut itself off.. After it cool down, it start up. We were told it might be in the steering column.


have you replaced yor thermostat? have you checked your radiator cooling fans to see if they are coming on while your car is heating up? when your temp. guage is halfway up your fan should come on. you can check fuses and relays in fuse box[black box under hood drivers side] check those to see if fuses are blown or if fan relays are coming on[ticking while engine heating up]radiator could need flushing out also, just narrow your search some by elimination. if you open radiator cap before you start engine,then start motor, let it warm up.look for circulation,,flow of fluid,bubbling, then thats a sign it's circulating,thermostat is good. no flow means that thermostat not opening,thats bad thermostat.replace the thermostat.if not that are fans coming on? when engine at mid range on temp. guage does fan come on? if not check fuses @ fan relay. if fan comes on ,it's good.check water pump pulley for wobbly pulley while motor not running, shake pulley back @ forth for play. any play in pulley means bad water pump. are the belts on? i went through everything i would look for myself. hope this finds your problem!!!!

Is there a cooling fan fuse?


Everything in car is fused. The fans are controlled by a thermal sensor. You will need a wiring diagram to test for a faulty sensor.

Car over heating


There could be a number of things causing your vehicle to overheat, you'll need to do some trouble shooting to find out what the problem is, here's a list of things that might help,
  • Check the thermostat, if it's defective replace it.
  • Check the coolant in the reservoir tank, it should be at the proper full level.
  • Sometimes when you change a thermostat there's a possibility you could get air in your coolant lines from having the coolant system opened up, this could keep your coolant from circulating through your system, if so you would need to bleed the air out of the coolant system.
  • The water pump should be inspected for leaking coolant out of the weep hole's, when a water pump go'es bad it may leak coolant, which would mean the seals on the pump are bad, also listen for squeeling noise's coming from the pump when the car is started, if it squeels the bearings are bad, there is also a possibility the water pump fins are wore down from corrosion, there is no way to inspect this without removing the pump.
  • check the drive belt for wear and tension, a bad tensioner or a bad drivebelt could have an effect on the operation of the water pump.
  • check the pressure cap on the coolant reservoir tank for good pressure, when you remove the cap you should hear a hissing sound this means you have good pressure in your cooling system, check for corrosion or build up on the cap, clean the cap if nessary, also check the coolant in the reservoir tank, it should be clean, if not you might need to have the cooling system flushed.
  • check the large upper and lower radiator hose's for cracks, swelling, and proper coolant flow.
  • Check the operation of the cooling Fan, and circuit, cooling fans use relays and fuses, some vehicles use more than one cooling fan, if your vehicle has two cooling fans there should be two relays and two fuses one for each fan, first visually inspect the fuses if one or both are bad replace them, when a relay is activated it sends voltage to your cooling fan, you can test the relay or relays for continuity by removing them and doing a proper continuity test according to your relays circuit diagram.
  • Check the coolant temperature sensor, most coolant temperature sensors are located directly in the thermostat housing, this sends information to your ecm which determines when to turn your cooling fan on and off, if it's defective replace it.
  • Inspect the radiator grill for any debris build up or damage.
