You should never need to adjust the cable what i suspect here is the back brakes need looking at ,but before i can tell you how to do it i will need to know if its
A drum brakes
B disk rear with cable to caliper
C rear disk with cable running to the interior of the disk and not to the caliper

If handbrake has excessive travel and the brake pedal is low then you havent set the rear brakes up properly ,if a drum then you clean the lip on the edge of the drum so it has a bevel then you manually adjust the auto adjuster till the drum just slides over then tap outer edge of drum wth a small hammer to level the shoes and then see if you can then adjust the auto adjuster up a bit more .Also when taking the drum off again make sure that the handbrake mechanism lever is right back ,Now if you adjust the brakes on the handbrake cable then it will be out of square and will not work on a brake roller tester ,and the footbrake will still feel spongey then you get a inspection failure for excessive pedal travel and low handbrake efficiency ,this model of car should be able to lock the rear brakes up at 30mph when jerking the handbrake up hard and it shouldnt have more than 3 clicks when done correctly

Remove the center console covering the parking brake lever. Locate the parking brake lever between the drivers seat and the front passenger seat. Put the parking brake lever in the lowest position.
Turn the cable adjuster locknut to make the nut loose. Find the nut at the base of the parking brake lever.
Raise your GT rear wheels using a jack and support the rear wheels using jack stands. Remove both rear wheels using a tire iron to loosen and take off the lug nuts. Take off the tire from the rods by hand.
Get underneath the car and remove the rubber hole plugs from the brake rotors. Locate the rotors on the underneath inside of the wheel wells.
Take off the brake calipers with a screwdriver, but do not disconnect the brake fluid lines.
Use a pry bar to push up on the parking brake self adjuster wheel. Locate this next to the brake caliper and it looks like a star wheel. Rotate this wheel until the rotors will not turn.
Turn the adjuster wheel five notches in the opposite direction. Reinstall the calipers and wheels. Lower your GT using the jack and remove the jack stands from the rear wheels.

Lift up the parking brake handle one click. Turn the engine on and look at the control panel. You should see the parking brake light. release parking brake and raise rear to make sure the wheels turn freely. forward and backwards. good-day !

1. Remove air cleaner and air intake hose assembly.
2. Remove center dash trim panel.
3. Remove center console cup holder assembly.
4. Remove floor console assembly.
5. Remove console side panels.
6. Remove Transmission Control Module ftMJ bracket.
1. Remove TCM.
8. Remove shifter cable from transaxle operating lever by removing nut and clip.
9. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever assembly by removing clip.
10. Remove shifter cable from shifter lever mechanism.
11. Remove cable from firewall grommet by removing grommet assembly nuts.
12. Remove gearshift cable from vehicle.
Lift and rotate the gearshift hand lever into the park (F9 gate position and remove the ignition
key. This confirms the shift lever is in the gated park (F9 position.
After confirming the park gate position. turn the ignition switch . If the starter will operate. the
park gate position is correct. Move the shift lever into the neutral (NJ position. If the starter
will operate in this position, the linkage is properly adjusted. If the starter fails to operate in
either position, linkage adjustment is required.
1. Park the vehicle on level ground and set the parking brake.
2. Place the gearshift lever in park (F9 gate position and remove key.
3. Loosen the cable adjustment screw at the transaxle operating lever.
4. Pull the transaxle operating lever fully forward to the park detent position.
5. Release the park brake, then rock the vehicle to assure it is in park lock. Reset the park
