I am assuming the whining noise is not in the engine area.
The transmission is the most likely cause.
When put in a heavy load on acceleration , The trasnmission internal pump is whining . The cause of this is lack of pressure from the fluid because of a seal or gasket , clutches or steels are damage.
When the vehicle gets into cruising speed , The pressrue is less and the pump is not working as hard. The torque convertor lock up helps the pump. I would make sure the fliud is topped off.
The noise might go away with the correct amount of fluid thus changing the overall pressure of the transmission fluid inside.
If this does not help, I would take to the transmission shop in the area ,
Again this is assuming the engine is running normally.
Hello there I can sure bet its the rear end howling. If you put it under a load between 40 to 65 mph you hear it right.I have had two of these trucks that did the same thing. The gears in the rear end are worn and walking away from each other. You'll either need to shim the rear end to get closer gear tolerances or the yoke that your drive shafts bolts to is loose or the gear thats on that which is the pinion on the inside of the axle is worn..Hope this helps you. Thanks and have a great day..
