Can you show me were to locate were you lock the crank on tdc for a aah v6 engine

Take out your spark plugs and (before) look on harmonic balancer biggest wheel;if you konow the #1 cylinder from tracing your plugwires remove the #1 plug and rotate it by hand its easier to get it exactly on tdc!! itll b a mark that says 0 it all depends on your engine and specs; as to if its 2 degrees before or after its self explanitory ' and if your doing it by your self then get a wad of toilet paper to fit in !1 hole crank by ignition easy!! click click!!! when you get close youll see or hear paper pop out! thats tdc! just make sure you get the correct info on your engines tdc an to what degree it calls for from autozone or ect; after this the pop take a flashlight and look in cylinder to see if top of piston is close to plug howl if not just grab the harmonic balancer n nudge it !! easy!! the piston should b right under teh plug hole visible! on the COMMPRESION STROKE!!!thats what the toilet papr was for! and there you have it hop e it helps bud!

All of the valves in the number one cylinders should be closed when the engine marks line up at TDC (top dead center). BTDC= before top dead center, ATDC = after top dead center.

How do you set the timing on a 1996 jeep cherokee v6 ?


take # 1 spark plug out, turn crank shaft till piston on # 1 reaches top dead center TDC, timing marks on crank shaft should line up, replace distributor making sure rotor points to # 1 spark plug wire.

Rebuilt my 454 engine, installed distributor with rotor at 0 TDC on #1 cylinder. Engine ran fine but ses light was on. Code was P1345-- disagreement between cam sensor and crank sensor. Scanner showed...


The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on TDC. (Top Dead Center) This "Static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at TDC.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing (usually has a #6 for 6 cylinder engines or a #8 for 8 cylinder engines) indicating the number one TDC alignment position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one TDC alignment mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to and aligned with the TDC alignment mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be "Static" timed. (The more precise that you are aligning the TDC alignment mark with the ignition rotor the better the engine will run, and it will be less likely that there will be a camshaft to crankshaft correlation problem)

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

Okay. I'm fixing my 1994 Saturn SL2 timing chain and I did everything the directions told me, but the timing marks aren't lining up correctly. I don't know what to do. Please help me.


It is not rare for people to have problems with engine after replacing the timing belt. In all my cars I do it by myself. It is not impossible, but you will spend more time than a professional. If you decide to do it by yourself, then get the Haynes Repair Manual (Based on a complete tear down and rebuilt), specific for your car. I have one for each of my cars. Go to the part Engine, and use the chapter Timing belt removal inspection, and Top Dead Center (TDC) location, and put the number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke. This can be found by putting the thumb over the spark plug hole and the pressure will push your finger upward till piston reaches the upper point. You have the crank shaft with a wrench. Now you are in compression stroke. To locate Top Dead Center Location, this can be done by inserting a long blunt object into the spark plug hole. Note the point where the object stops moving out this is the TDC.
Are you sure that the piston at cylinder N#1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Please check it out, and if not correct.The timing marks can be lining up correctly, ONLY if the piston at cylinder N31 is at TDC in compression stroke. I repeat again in compression stroke.

hi, here is a guide i have come across on this site written by another expert it should be the one for your engine but always double check.

If you are unsure what you are doing then please go out and buy a haines workshop manual as these tell you every detail you need to know so that would be your best solution.

Please dont do this work if your unsure what you are doing as you could damage the engine beyond repair so you have been warned;

Timing Belt - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

2.8L SOHC (AFC) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  3. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-up.
  4. Turn the engine by hand to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the firing stroke for cylinder No. 1.
NOTE The large holes in the camshaft sprocket lock plates should be on the inside facing one another.
  1. Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Loosen the tensioner roller and remove the drive belt.
To install :
  1. Install the timing belt over the sprockets, then the idler rollers and lastly over the tensioner.
  2. Install camshaft alignment tool holder Tool No. 3243 into the camshaft alignment flanges.
  3. Check and adjust the cam belt tension such that the upper left portion of the belt between the tensioner and the left cam gear can just be twisted 90° ( 1 / 4 turn).
  4. Tighten the cam belt tensioning roller to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm), and the camshaft sprocket bolts.
  5. The balance of the installation is in reverse order of removal.

2.8L DOHC 5V (AHA) V6 Engine
  1. Note the radio security code and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the service position. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  3. Remove the engine accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-up.
  4. Turn the engine by hand to Top Dead Center (TDC) on the firing stroke for cylinder No. 1.
NOTE The large holes in the camshaft sprocket lock plates should be on the inside facing one another.
  1. On the cylinder block near the crankshaft, remove the sealing plug from the lower left side of the engine block. Make sure the engine is at TDC and install the threaded crankshaft holding pin Tool No. 3242 and lightly tighten.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt covers, the crankshaft vibration damper and then the lower timing belt cover.
  3. Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolts slightly and use a suitable pulley to release the sprockets from the tapered ends of the camshafts.
  4. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, insert a 2mm spring pin through the tensioner housing and tensioner plunger to secure it in place. When the plunger is secure, release the wrench tension.
  5. Remove the damper-to-crankshaft bolts and the damper.
NOTE It is not necessary to remove the center bolt when removing the crankshaft damper.
  1. Remove the serpentine belt idler and the crankshaft damper guard.
  2. Mark the running direction of the timing belt and remove it from the pulleys.

To install:
  1. Make sure that the camshaft pulleys and the crankshaft pulley are in alignment with TDC of the No. 1 cylinder's compression stroke.
  2. Install the timing belt; make sure the timing belt is installed in the correct running direction from which it was removed.
  3. Using a 8mm Allen® wrench, rotate the timing belt tensioner roller clockwise until the tensioner is compressed; then, remove the 2mm spring pin from the tensioner housing. Slowly, release the tensioner spring pressure to put pressure on the timing belt.
  4. Install the crankshaft damper guard and the serpentine belt idler pulley; torque the idler pulley bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  5. Install the crankshaft damper and torque the damper-to-crankshaft bolts to 15 ft. lbs. If the damper-to-crankshaft center bolt was removed, torque it to 147 ft. lbs. (200 Nm) plus 180° 1 / 2 turn).
  6. Remove the Crankshaft Holder tool No. 3242 and install the sealing plug.
  7. Replace the remaining components by reversing the removal procedures.
  8. Refill the cooling system and the automatic transaxle. Connect the electrical connectors. Install the negative battery cable last.
  9. Test drive the vehicle.

How do u make sure u r on top dead center


remove no 1 spark plug and insert a long screw driver (make sure it cann't drop into cylinder ) then turn engine over by hand carfully when the screw driver is at it's highest point thats tdc

How do i set timing on a 1988 chevy s10 please show pics


get timing light and attach to #1 cylinder unhook timming comp. mark pully at T.D.C (top dead center) and crank engine. adjust distributor till #1 and #4 are within hash mark 0 on top of pully. not positive how to tell it the best way but tried. that is how i interpreted it

Trying to set the timing on this car with a new engine,please help.


timing belt replace v6 engine turn the crankshaft clok wise slowly and make sure that nothing is stoping it for turning, until the key on the mark reach 12 o clok (TDC) the piston no 1 is att the top dead center .if the piston stop before reaching the top dead center ,,,,,one valve or two are open and the cam have to be ajust so dhat valve can close up,,,,,, so after the crank alignement ,the two cam marks at LEFT CAM 2 o clok right cam10 O CLOK ,,,note the belt slack must be on the tensioner side
