Usually that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Need to adjust idle speed by turning air adjusting screw on throttle body idle should be 750 - 790 RPM. make sure spark plugs and wires okay. make sure distributor cap and rotor good.replace fuel filter do a little tune because if engine not fine tuned one bad cylinder will cause engine not to idle if you have fuel injection system clean fuel injectors by filling gas tank full add a can of seafoam to fuel tank see what happens.

It's probably one of two things , a vacum leak or a bad ground.

Running problems

Idle air control valve or a vacuum leak, the idle air control valve controls the amount of air let into your engine when you start or while running you holding your foot on the gas lets more air in.

89 dodge shadow. hard start. normal idle cold, fast idle warm. sometimes it wont start until i hear fuel pump activate.

Hello,
The car may be hard to start because it may need a normal tune-up. If the spark plugs are pretty used, they will slowly stop burning as much fuel because the spark slowly gets lesser and lesser. On a cold day the fuel is harder to ignite with a small amount of spark.
Normal idle when its cold means that your cars idle is probably too high. If you lower the idle, the choke on a cold day will keep the idle a little higher until the motor warms and then it will kick back off. If the idle is too high, it will run very rich, smothering itself with fuel, and causing the idle to stay low. When the car warms, its creating better spark when its warm, and with the idle being too high its running at a fast idle.
The car wont start sometimes can be the cause of a few things. If the ground is bad on the fuel pump, it wont make a good connection sometimes for when you turn the key on, the fuel pump dont pump the fuel to the engine. Another one can be that your accessory switch can be loose going to the fuel pump. I think its your ground though. Good luck! Hope this helps.
Have a nice day. -Steve

My neon started idling at 4000+ rpms and wont idle down. car is undrivable because engine revs to high to stop with brakes.

check for major vaccum leaks and it none found then you may have a bad idle air control valve, that controls the idle start there, good luck.
