the reason it getting hot when stopped is the fan relay is out thus not turning the cooling fan on,this is a time consuming job,the relay is located on the passenger side tip of the frame behind the headlight, the grill, headlights, bumper, and tip of the front fender has to be loosened up to get to it.
The relay is about 70.00 or so,the engine cools down when you drive as you are forcing air through the radiator to cool it down,as for the heater issue probably caused by boiling the anti freeze out ,
To make sure the engine is ok do a compression check to verify the headgasket and heads are ok,as for smelling the sweet smell which is antifreeze probably due to overheating and pushing the fluid out of the cap or tank.

SOURCE: my car starts and then dies
sounds like a security issue they installed a factory security system which will prevent the vehicle from running unless its reset go to passenger door lock turn key twice it worked for me after chasing other problems for a few hours

Well I had the same problem and wow was I surprised man. I have a code machine that plugs into my car and tells me what wrong with it then I fix it. It read that I had a misfire #1 so that means my spark plug is dirty or something like that. When I took off the spark plug it was smashed in that was a good sign.. I called a mechanic friend of mine and he said that my head and piston were damaged but would not really know unless he took it apart. What he said was true and cost me a great deal of money..!!!! Now searching the web I have found that there many jeep liberty with the same problem just different spark plug locations so I wonder if Jeep knows of this issue but will not acknowledge it.. If you need more information please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org

Put the key in the ignition and turn it on and off (3) times without starting the jeep, leaving it in the on position count the (1) flashing indicator Light, Eg: (5) flashes, Then there will be a pause, then it may flash (3) times, this is a code #53. Keep your Eye on them and write them down. If you should miss (1) Repeat as many times as needed, Info: A #55 means there are no codes!!
