To determine what's wrong, u need to have the codes read. If the light is coming on, it is a signal that something is wrong w/ the emissions system. A code is stored in the cars computer that will indicate what the problem is. Most parts stores will read the stored engine codes for free. They plug a scan tool into a port under the dash to retrieve the code(s). Write them down, and ask what u should do to correct the problem. If u have any further questions after that, u can post them here. Let me know how u make out.

I can give you an Idea where to look for first check the cranchaft positoner sensor for proroer resistance it is a maagnets that picks up magnetic inductions and sense them the the E.C.U.and also check tha Air velocity sensor right by the INtake rubber tube thats sens the speed of air if is broken the filament will do what you car is doing and last t.c.s. throtle control sensor which is not likely to cause that problem but you never know chech for proper resistance firstname.lastname@example.org look for my web site 2mechanicsonwheels.com

85k is not high mileage. once you reach where it won't shift try letting go of the gas pedal completely for about 2 seconds and then push again and see if that makes it change. you may want to try to slip stop in your transmission. well if letting go of the gas pedal works you may have a problem with your modulator and i can tell you that's not cheap to fix
