White smoke? Coolant is getting in the cylinder and the white smoke is really steam. Sounds like you have a blown head gasket. Bad news is that it needs to be replaced...good news is that the inline 6 cylinder engine is one of the easier head gaskets to replace. I've never replaced a head gasket but did it on my Cherokee just three months ago. If you tag your parts and pay attention how they are taken off you can do it. The other option is to replace the engine as they are pretty cheap to get. Good luck.

What are causes for overheating?

If the smoke is white you probably have a hole in a hose for the coolant system. But to answer your question you could have a thermostat stuck, fan belt broke or slipping, hole in a radiator hose, or a heater hose with a hole in it allowing the coolant to spray on the hot engine causing it to smoke and if bad enough causing the engine to shut down.

You may have a blown engine head gasket. Check your oil to see if it is milky because water is getting into the oil, and check the water to see if oil is getting into the coolant.
If you have either of these, you may need to have a new head gasket for the engine, and hopefully you do not have a cracked engine head.
This will require a fair bit of work to fix correctly. Your local garage or mechanic may be your next call.
There are some products you can use in the coolant for either of these, but it is only a temporary fix.

1996 Acura 3.2TL Overheating Problem...

From your description of symtoms it sounds like you have a bad water pump. If the coolant is not circulating properly you will have a heating problem. Sometimes even a new thermostat can stick and cause the engine to overheat. I have seen them fail in as little as a week after they were installed.

First, plastic tube may be the overflow vent from the coolant bottle.Check to see where the attached end goes. You are going to have to check engine for coolant leaks (carefully refill system without spilling anything, then look for dripping anywhere. Look for leaks from all hoses, fittings radiator, water pump etc) After checking for leaks, start it up and check again (watch where you put your hands though) While running, check that the fan comes on when the vehicle reaches operating temp.(no fan, check fan motor, sensor & relay) Turn the heat on (does it have heat?) Check temp of lower hose and upper hose. If overheat happens, is lower hose still cold? (likely bad thermostat). If you found a leak, replace whatever is leaking...best insurance is to change thermostat after any overheat. Last, is there any white smoke from tailpipe, does engine run rough? If so, could be a failed head gasket or crack in cylinder head. (at this point last thing to worry about unless there is excessive smoke or rough run or oil in radiator or coolant in oil).

I have a '96 SL1. I have the same problem. I found out it was the water pump. Water pumps have "weep" holes for when they are about to die. The coolant leaks out of the hole.

1999 Cadillac Deville Engine trouble

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line. It's job is to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage. The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side to near the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.
