Test the voltage+test the fuse+test the wiring terminals for loose or corroded and fix it.

Trailer lights wiring not getting power


It is uncommon to have all trailer lights non operational at the plug. Make sure you are using a known good test light and have a GOOD ground supply when testing for power at each individual pin. Depending on make and model, some do utilize fuses that should be checked as well

I have a 2009 GMC Sierra with towing package and a 7 pin plug on the rear bumper. I hooked up a new trailer with electric brakes and the display on the dash shows "trailer connected" and shows increasing...


It's a very good possibility that it is the trailer. You say that it is new, is it a brand new trailer or just new to you? If it is brand new, and you bought it from a place that deals with trailers, then I would say take it back and have them look over everything. If that's not an option, then it's time to pull out the circuit tester and start checking wires. See if you are getting power to the Blue wire on the trailer, and if so is there power all the way to the brakes. You will need someone to push on the brake pedal while checking the wires. If the power is good all the way to the brakes, then you will need to pull the drums and inspect the brake shoes for wear, and condition of the the brake components. If this is a used trailer, then it would be a good idea to do this anyway so that you can also inspect and grease the bearings. If everything looks good, then the brakes might just need to be adjusted via the slot on the back side of the brake housing. If no power is seen in the blue wire, check the Red wire (12v Aux/charging), if it doesn't have power, then you more than likely have a Ground issue. This can easily be checked by hooking the trailer to the truck (hitch). Both use a chassis ground, and will use the hitch itself as the ground connection, though it is not a good idea to use it as the ground point.

Check trailer plug and see if correct colors used on trailer plug
Would suggest getting a 12volt probe so you can test the car socket when left indicator is going on - flashing
To check that the correct pin has 12volts flashing left on it.

Back up wire intrailer connector has no power back up lights work


Did you make sure you have a good ground? I had to install an additional ground wire from my trailer frame to my truck frame to make sure that I have constant ground so that things don't stop working.

But you should also check and make sure that you have the right wiring to operate back up lights in a trailer. Normally the flat four wire type connectors are not designed for a trailer with back up lights.

Sounds like the vehicle came with towing package. There should be 2 large wires and a smaller one. The blue "should" be trailer brake feed. The other large wire, usually the black, would be 12 volt power for trailer interior lights and battery charge. The red should be a smaller wire and it is the back up light wiring to the trailer. Most trailers don't use this wire, except for brake lock out on some boat trailers with hydraulic brakes. Also see http://www.etrailer.com/faq-wiring.aspx. Trailer brakes


Take a 12 volt test light... the kind that has a spring loaded clip to hold the probe into the wire, and insert it into the wire just before the trailer plug, vehicle side. (Blue I think) If there is a connection, the brake should see it and you should have an indicator light. When you activate the brake the test light should lite up. If not, move up to the brake actuator and test the blue wire. If there is nothing at the actuator, check the black wire. It is power to the controller. If no power there, check fuses again. If it does pick it up at the plug, connect the trailer and test the trailer itself. First ground to the trailer and then to the truck. Most problems are ground wire related. Then move to the axle and test it there. For the brakes to work, and even show on the indicator, there has to be a ground and power to the brakes themselves. There are 2 wires to each brake... a ground and a power. Test across both wires to make sure you have power and ground. You can also hook another trailer to your truck or another truck to your trailer. Lights can work through trailer ball ground. Brakes can't. leave the trailer unhooked from the trailer and hook the wiring up and test the lights. That usually will indicate a good or faulty ground. No power to trailer hookup


Check your ground wire. If it's ok, take a test lead and check for power in the plug on your truck. If still no power trace the wires at the back of the truck to where the plug for your trailer light hooks into the truck lights make sure the conection is good and the plugs aren't corroided.

No running lights on camper trailer


Hey Paul, it's most likely a wiring problem. There is one wire designated for just the running lights. What type of plug does the truck have? Probably 6 or 7 way (6 or 7 wire). You can check the plug-in at the truck with a multi-meter to see if there's power at that point. If there is, then the problem is somewhere from the trailer plug to the lights on the trailer. If you have a 7 way plug, the center plug is for aux. power (back up lights on what you pull, if equipped). One wire is power to the camper battery for a breakaway switch, one for left turn and stop, one for right turn and stop, a ground wire, one for running lights, and one for trailer brakes. To determine what wire does what, 1st with meter check volts of all wires w/ truck and trailer hooked up, truck running, power wire to battery for breakaway should show voltage if equipped w/ a trickle charge, brake wire will show low voltage, approx. 2 volts, apply brakes and should go up to approx. 12 volts, put on L turn signal, meter should go up and down, as power to blinker pulses on and off, do the same to determine which is the R turn signal (put foot on truck brakes will show voltage to brake lights AND brakes, continue w/ process of elimination to determine which is running lights, and exactly where power is not going.
