Question about 1989 Ford Bronco

Open Question

89 bronco 302, aod, 4wd. The transmission is stuck in 3rd gear. Shifter will move to every position but dies in park and reverse and wil not start in park only neutral. Leaving a corner it starts out in 3rd and never leaves 3rd. Upon visual inspection the only thing I see from under the truck is the vent/vac (on top just in front of the tcase) is no longer attached. I know not how long it has been unattached. It does have a bad front pump seal losing about a quart a day but I never let it get below one qt low before filling it back up. Any information at all to help me would be appreciated. This is also the 1st auto I have ever owned. Thank you for any advice.

SOURCE: Hi,

The weld on the manual lever is known to break loose. First, with the wheels off the ground, with the lever in the park position, does the drive shaft lock in park? If yes or no sometimes, drop the trans pan. I bet the nut on the lever camd loose.

You have a serious mechanical failure in the transmission, it will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

My first thought is bent shifter forks or linkage is off. Start with the linkage as it is easier. Shifter forks are internal tranny components.

My 4x4 is stuck in four wheel low it is shift on the fly and i have already replaced the transfer case motor

Ok here is a long shot but sometimes it will work. Put the 4wd position switch to 4wd Lo, put your transmission in reverse and back up for about 50 yards, stop and put your transmission in neutral, then shift the 4wd to 4wd hi, wait a few seconds and shift the 4wd to 2wd hi, Sometimes the t-case will get stuck and this is how you reset the computer. I have known people that really got their t-cases messed up because they thought that shift on the go meant that they could shift the t-case into 4wd LO while moving but shift on the go is only for 4wd hi the gears will not mesh up fast enough for 4wd LO because the ratio is 1 to 1 . I hope this helps you.

is the idle speed correct? do you shift into second before trying to engage reverse?, is the clutch ok, this is most likely not the trans at all but one of the above issues, the clutch is my guess.

My Bronco is stuck in reverse

Make sure your emergency brake cable hasn't seized up. Some vehicles use reverse to adjust the brakes. Try moving the vehicle with the clutch pushed in, then with the clutch out to make sure it is not sticking, check your shifter linkage to make sure it is not bent or sticking.

Engine dies when put into Drive

When the vehicle is put into reverse. The transmission is working in 1st gear. The valve body and solenoids are working as designed.
When you change to Drive , The valve body could be getting stuck.
The transmission is starting our in a higher gear. Such as 3rd or over drive. There is to much torque for the engine to continue to run and is shutting down. Another possibility is the Torque converter has a lock up mode for when you are traveling down the highway.
This also can be stuck in that mode. I would take it to a local transmission shop for complete Diagnosis
