Typical symptoms of a bad heater core are no heat, or leaking antifreeze into the cabin at your feet. You could also see the vehicle overheating or running hot.

Heater core


Sounds like a bad heater core. You will get steam/vapor out of vents from this. If you are referring to the over flow tube being the evaporator drain tube at the firewall its because the heater core shares the same case with the A/C and its filling up with anti-freeze.

Our front ac is not working and back is cold in our 1999 GMC suburban, we tried putting freon and it didn't work


Dual zone front/rear ac systems have 2 evaporator cores. And 2 orifice tubes, which are just inline
filters. Either your front evaporator core or orifice tube is probably stopped up.

Sometimes you can get to the evaporator cores without removing them from the vehicle, and clean it.
Evaporator cores do get stopped up sometimes, because the blower motor pulls in air with dust and debris from outside, and the air is cooled when it passes through the evaporator core.

But evaporator cores are a nightmare to replace, you usually have to remove lots of stuff under the dash and lots of stuff under the hood to remove them.

Heater core


If anti-freeze is actually coming out of the drain tube then yes, you could very well have a bad heater core. You may also be able to smell antifreeze while inside the vehicle if it is leaking. [Its a kind of sickly sweet smell] If just clear water is dripping out then this is most likely from normal condensation that is collecting and dripping off of the air conditioning evaporator core as the air conditioner runs. This condensation collects in the heater, a/c housing then drips out of the same little drain. Water from normal condensation will evaporate off of cement or pavement pretty quickly but antifreeze takes quite a while to evaporate away and feels slimy to the touch. It doesn't take much of an antifreeze leak before the cooling system gets low on so make sure you don't run low on coolant which can cause the engine to overheat.

Which way does the orifice tube go? Orange end or white end to the firewall?

The A/C evaporator core orifice has the following characteristics:
  • is color-coded orange
  • has a diameter of 1.46 mm (0.058 inch)
  • is located in the condenser to evaporator tube (19835)
  • has filter screens located on the inlet and outlet ends of the tube body
The A/C evaporator core orifice is the restriction in the refrigerant circuit that creates the pressure drop necessary for cooling by metering the flow of liquid refrigerant into the A/C evaporator core (19860), which reduces the pressure. Operation is as follows:
  • The inlet filter screen acts as a strainer for the liquid refrigerant flowing through the A/C evaporator core orifice.
  • O-rings on the A/C evaporator core orifice prevent the high-pressure liquid refrigerant from bypassing the A/C evaporator core orifice .
  • Adjustment or services cannot be made to the A/C evaporator core orifice assembly. It must be replaced as a unit.

it's in the high pressure liquid line.

A/C Evaporator Core Orifice The A/C evaporator core orifice (19D990) should be replaced whenever the A/C compressor (19703) is replaced for lack of performance (internal damage). The A/C evaporator core orifice, located in the condenser to evaporator tube (19835), cannot be serviced in detail as a component of the line. If replacement is necessary, follow the procedure outlined for Liquid Line Removal and Installation. An orifice tube replacement service kit may be used as an optional service procedure. Refer to Section 12-00 for information regarding the use of an A/C Evaporator Core Orifice Replacement Kit E5VY-19D695-A.

A/C Evaporator Core Orifice Replacement Kit Installation
  1. Discharge A/C refrigerant system. Refer to System Discharging and Recovery as outlined.
  1. Remove condenser to evaporator tube (19835) from vehicle.
  1. Locate A/C evaporator core orifice (19D990) by three indentations or a circular recess in metal portion of the condenser to evaporator tube.

  1. Note angular position of ends of condenser to evaporator tube so that it can be reassembled in correct position.
  1. Cut a 63.5 mm (2.5 inch) section from condenser to evaporator tube at A/C evaporator core orifice location. Do not cut closer than 25.4 mm (1 inch) from start of a bend in tube.

  1. Remove contaminants from the two pieces of the condenser to evaporator tube.
  1. NOTE: The inlet half of the condenser to evaporator tube will be positioned against the A/C evaporator core orifice tabs when correctly assembled.

    Lubricate fitting with clean refrigerant oil and assemble orifice tube kit (with A/C evaporator core orifice installed) to condenser to evaporator tube. Make sure flow direction arrow is pointing toward evaporator end of the condenser to evaporator tube, and taper of each compressor ring is toward compression nut.

I assume he used a leak tester and found a leak in the evap which is inside the plenum housing. Need to remove the plenum to get access to the evap. big job. If you are technical, you could remove the plenum assembly and let him replace the evap & then let you out the plenum back in. Then take back to have him evacuate and recharge system.

NOTE: The evaporator core is not separately serviceable. It is serviced only with the evaporator core housing assembly.
NOTE: Installing a new suction accumulator is not required when repairing the refrigerant system except when there is physical evidence of system contamination from a failed A/C compressor or damage to the suction accumulator.
NOTE: If an evaporator core leak is suspected, the evaporator core must be leak tested before it is removed from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
  1. Remove the evaporator core housing. For additional information, refer to Section 412-02 .
  1. Transfer the components from the old evaporator core housing to the new evaporator core housing

Evaporator Core Housing Removal
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
  1. Recover the refrigerant. For additional information, refer to Section 412-00 .
  1. Drain the radiator. For additional information, refer to Section 303-03 .
  1. Remove the screws and the RH cowl vent screen.
  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses and the wire harness connector from the evaporative emission canister purge valve (EVAP canister purge valve) (9C915).
  1. Remove the nuts and remove the evaporative emission canister purge valve.
  1. Remove the heater hoses from the heater core.
  1. Remove the screw and reposition the windshield washer fluid reservoir.
  1. Disengage the four wire harness retainers from the top of the RH fender apron.
  1. Remove the RH front wheel and tire.
  1. Remove the screws from the RH fender apron and remove the fender apron.
  1. Disconnect the wire harness connector from the A/C cycling switch (19E561).
  1. Disconnect the wire harness connector from the blower motor (18527).
  1. Disengage the wire harness connector from the retainer.
  1. Disconnect the evaporator to compressor suction line from the suction accumulator/drier (19C836). For spring lock couplings disconnect and connect general procedure, refer to Section 412-00 .

    Disconnect the suction accumulator/drier from the A/C evaporator core.
  1. Remove the clamp screw retaining the A/C accumulator mounting bracket to the A/C evaporator core housing and remove the suction accumulator/drier.
  1. Disconnect the condenser to evaporator tube from the A/C evaporator core (19860). For spring lock couplings disconnect and connect general procedure, refer to Section 412-00 .
  1. Remove the RH instrument panel insulator.
    • Remove the pushpins.
    • Disengage the courtesy lamp holder.
    • Disconnect the power point wire harness connector and remove the RH instrument panel insulator.
  1. Remove the in-car temperature sensor hose and elbow from the evaporator housing.
  1. Remove the nuts at the top of the evaporator housing.
  1. Remove the nuts at the bottom of the evaporator housing.
  1. Remove the screw and nut near the blower motor.
  1. Remove the screws.
  1. Separate the housing and remove the blower motor and A/C evaporator core.
  1. Disconnect the wire harness connector.
  1. Remove the evaporator core cover.
