Question about 1988 Ford Ranger

88 ranger 2.3L 2wd ext. cab have to start repeatedly and then jerks and stalls

Trucks starts for second and stalls repeatedly. Once running shuts off and starts repeatedly. Once over that jerks irregularly sometimes once in a while, sometimes very rapid nonstop then all is good then again and repeats whole trip. Truck is driven 50-60 miles daily 5 days of the week. has new gas tank, plugs, plug wires, and distributor cap

Have the fault codes read. Replace faulty items. Use only genuine items as non-genuine replacement are not always compatible with the OEM fitted CPU units. Look for position sensor with intermittent fault. Check all wire connectors for loose or dirty.

Replace the distributor's magnetic pickup located inside the distributor surrounding the distributor shaft, the only other thing thankfully on this ignition system if memory serves me on the f 150 straight six 300 cu inch is the dura spark ignition control box, of course do the obvious tune up parts replacement dist.cap rotor,plug , sparkplugs before spending the $40.00 - $50.00 bucks on the dist.. pick up, you may have a weak a fuel pump check for adequate fuel pressure at carb 7 - 10 lbs.

I have an 86 bronco II, 2.9efi. My problem was the temp sensor. Behind the upper hose on the passenger side there's a sensor with a 2 wire plug. Unhook it and place a jumper wire between the 2 contacts in the plug. If that works, replace the sender (about $12.00) I ended up installing a switch, Off position to start and on to run. I have a 2001 ford ranger ext cab 4.0 v6 4x4. the truck at times jerks and at stop signs runs rough then the speedometer bounces while stopped


Have you tired the Idle Air Control Valve? When was the last time you did a tune-up with new Spark Plugs and spark plug wires? Make sure you use Motorcraft Platinum spark plugs if you want the best performance for your vehicle.

check the ignition switch, they separate and cause this stall out, try holding the ignition to the crank position just short of causing the starter to run, if the engine stays running then the ignition switch is defective, Ford recalled many of these for this problem, not sure your truck was affected, but it does use the sam switch and gets the same problem.

Fuel Problem


fuel pressure regulator? This diverts excess pressure from the rail back to the tank. When they wear out they usually stay stuck open thus diverting all pressure back to the tank. Pressure tests do not reveal this as pressure is checked before the rail not in it. I do believe you have a bad fuel regulator. They are 75US ouch.

Sounds like your fuel pump is going out on you. Check your fuel pressure. You should have 40 psi when the key is in "on" position. You should have no less than 5 psi under that when it's running.
