SOURCE: Check engine on, coolant overheating, i already

All car cooling systems have at least 10lb pressure, check with your manufacturer on your car's radiator pressure cap or local parts supplier. If pressure is alot more then I would suspect a leaking head gasket.

Easiest test for the obvious leaking head gasket is when the engineis cold / remove the radiator cap and fill right to the top with water and crank / start engine. If you see a mini "guyser" of water come out then head (S) need to come off.

You haven't mentioned whether its actually losing . using water??

Hi!!
There is a problem with the hole getting clogged right by where the engine connection is, use a piece of wire to unclog the orifice and reinstall the line. You should be OK after that.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: my 97 deville sputters when you press on the gas

Start by putting Lucas fuel stabilizer ,this will remove water in the tank and stabilize bad gas. It also cleans injectors some what. If this doesn't work move on to your fuel pressure regulator and make sure u have good injectors. Also replace fuel filter, easy to do with the purchase of a five dollar tool at any parts store.

Buy a block tester. It hooks up to your radiator and lets u know if exhaust gasses are mixing with your coolant wich would mean u have a (blown head). Do this before you spend anymore money.

Can a worn out coolant cap cause overheating

There is no radiator cap on the Northstar engine.
The only cap is on the surge tank (or expansion tank) and is pressurized.

So the answer is Yes, a faulty surge tank cap will result in the loss of coolant and therefore lead to overheating.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.
