Why does my 2008 chev Malibu drive like it has no power steering?

Are there an light's lit on the instrument your not familiar with ? DO you have regular Malibu or Malibu Classic ?
Also does yours have hydraulic power steering or Electric power steering ? GM had known problems with EPS - electric power steering . Your best bet would be to take it an have it checked out at a qualified repair shop .

Power steering unit quit working, what do I do to get it going again, I checked the obvious fuse

Fuses have nothing to do with the power steering which is a manual unit, not electrically assisted.

Check the power steering fluid level. If that is OK, you need a new unit.

Battery won't keep charge

sounds to me you have a faulty power steering unit, if it blown the fuse you must have electric power steering. I suspect your power steering is draining the battery. (internal short in power steering unit) If your battery won't hold or take a charge, replace it. check your alternator as well as that charges the battery.

Power steering fluid specs

Yes, ATF is fine. You can put that in your power steering altho they make regular power steering fluid too.
You can't put ps fluid in a transmission.

I drive a 1998 isuzu rodeo v6. Just wondering what the thing is called that brings the power steering fluid to the tires. I'm assuming that's where it's leaking from. Thanks for any help!

Hi Dillon J
The items name is Power Steering Unit
Your leaking power steering fluid from either the power steering unit, or a hose that connects to the power steering unit...
You need to have it repaired as soon as possible, because if you loose all your fluid it will be almost impossible to steer.

Power steering tank wont hold fluid and leaks out beside driver tire

Sounds like a blown power steering line. To confirm, wipe down all surfaces around the power steering unit including the lines. Replace the power steering fluid and start the engine. While 1 person is inside the truck, have them turn the wheel from side to side while another watches the area around the power steering unit paying very close attention around the lines. The high pressure line is the most common cause for leaking fluid. If there's no crack or kink in the line, the issue may be the fitting itself where it connects to the power steering pump. Both parts are pricey but replacing the high pressure line (about $150 at the dealer) is certainly less expensive than replacing the whole power steering unit itself.

How do I check power steering/it keeps coming on and now my steering is very constricted?

If its EPS (Electronic Power Steering) it's better to diagnose it in a local repairshop.

If it's a hydraulic system - check the fluid level, refill if low. Check for leaks starting at the pump, the hoses and the power unit at the steering wheel.

Front tire pressure shouldn't be too low. Low tire pressure stresses the power steering unit to the max.

How do you fix the power steering of a 2006 chevy malibu, when drive the steering wheel locks up and its very hard to turn.

a few possibilities.
Low power steering fluid. check for correct amount on pump filler measureing guage.

Loose power steering belt. check to see if the belt slips over the power steering pulley while trying to turn the steering wheel. may need an assistant.

last, but most expensive. Rack and pinion steering bar is defective and needs replacing.

Can low steering fluid cause mechanical problems

Problems associated with low power steering fluid…

Hard Vehicle Steering
A low power steering fluid level can often times cause a vehicle's steering to become hard and labored. Adequate amounts of power steering fluid are necessary to enable a vehicle's power steering system to function and operate at optimum levels. A lack of power steering fluid in a vehicle's power steering system reduces the amount of hydraulic fluid pressure necessary to efficiently operating the various parts of the entire power steering system. Power steering fluid supplies the fluid force needed to operate the power steering gears and to enable power steering gearbox operation. Low power steering fluid levels reduce this hydraulic pressure, which commonly results in hard vehicle steering.

Pump Noise
It is very common for a low power steering fluid level to cause significant power steering pump noise. An adequate amount of power steering fluid is required to ensure the proper function and longevity of a power steering pump unit, which is a belt-driven pump responsible for housing and circulating power steering pump fluid. A low level of power steering fluid results in increased power steering pump friction, heat, and wear, all of which can significantly reduce the operational life of the power steering pump while at the same time cause excessive power steering pump noise.

Fluid Boiling
Many times a low power steering fluid level can result in excessive heating of power steering fluid, a condition that can seriously degrade the fluid and cause it to boil. A low power steering fluid level results in less available fluid to both lubricate and cool a power steering pump unit. A lack of power steering pump lubrication and cooling leads to excessive heat being generated within the power steering pump unit itself, a condition that translates into the available level of power steering fluid becoming super-heated and degraded. When this happens it is common for the power steering fluid to boil and lose all of its lubricating and heat-reducing capabilities.

Gearbox Wear
The power steering gearbox is a set of gears within a vehicle's power steering system designed to facilitate movement of a vehicle's front wheels. The power steering gearbox is connected to the power steering pump by hydraulic fluid lines that deliver a constant supply of power steering fluid to the power steering gearbox. A low power steering fluid level, especially a chronic and severe low power steering fluid level, can lead to increased friction and wear within the power steering gearbox assembly, a condition that can significantly shorten the operational life of the power steering gearbox and negatively affect its operation

Fluid check

The 2002 thru 2007 do not have the traditional hydraulic power stering unit that requires fluid. In these models, power assist is provided by an electrical power steering unit. Nothing to check there but the battery.
