You can buy a scanner and hook up to the computer on the truck. Or you can jumper a plug in the engine compartment and make the check engine light flash the trouble codes. You can look online for the procedure and the definition of the codes.
I doubt you will get much info about the transmission since transmission control did not become the computer's job until later in the 1990s.

it sounds like the filter might not be the right one....
or the pump isnt priming.....
like "diesel mudder" said previously : was yr tranny in bad shape b4 you changed the fluid and screen?
