SOURCE: fuel tank vent valve?

If it`s the one on top of the tank then yes it can be replaced without replacing the whole tank.In order to remove it you have to push down and counter clockwise. If you can`t get one at the dealer then go to the salvage yard and take one off a tank there. If it comes off you could get s check engine light.Good luck.

My husband has a VS commodore and it goes through a tank on petrol in one day...it is costing us a fortune what could be the possible cause...

When an engine burns significantly more fuel than it should it will not run smoothly and modern engines that are controlled and monitored electronically should signal a fault under those conditions.

If the engine runs smoothly with it's usual performance and no warning lights have switched on, the problem could be a fuel leak.
