SOURCE: 1997 subaru outback legacy overheating

I've had the same problem all year. I've had four different mechanics look at this car - 97 legacy with 2.5. I've had the coolant seals replaced, the radiator cap, the thermostat, the water pump - all to no avail. I've realized now that it only overheats shortly after running sustained high rpm's. Recently the last mechanic mentioned the bleeder valve (I didn't know it had one and think maybe he didn't know either - not a subaru mechanic). Recently it overheated again (again sustained high rpm's - apparently more prone to produce air in the system), I sat the vehicle on an incline (raising the bleeder valve to be the highest point) and let the car warm up and run for half an hour. Now 300 miles and no overheat. I went through alot with this car to get to this point. Unbelievable.

If you have any of the large chain auto parts stores in your area, call them and ask if they do free scans; most do.
If Subaru has maintained the same procedures for a while, and you have checked fluids, etc., you can try resetting the light via the ignition switch:
-Turn on the ignition (don't start) - switch it rapidly between the 'ignition on' and 'ignition off' positions three times.
If the error has cleared itself (not uncommon), the check light will reset. If the problem is still present, it will either stay or come back on.
Our Su has done this a couple of times and with the scanner we have on hand, there was never any particular repeated problem. Just a computer glitch/hiccough -

SOURCE: check engine light on in 2001 subaru outback - car

If the light was flashing when it came on, then it means your engine is misfiring.

A solid light can mean anything from a loose/faulty gas cap to a transmission issue.

This light comes on when the computer detects a fault of some sort in its diagnostic tests. If it keeps detecting this issue, the light will remain on. If the light turns off, then it has detected that the issue may no longer be present.

In order to find out what the exact reason was for your light, You need to have your car computer scanned to retrieve the code that the computer would have stored when the light triggered. Most garages will do this free of charge. The code will tell you what may have caused the light to initially turn on.

SOURCE: ABS Light and Check Engine Light on, Cruise light flashing

I had this occur on my 2007 Subaru Tribeca. ABS, Traction Control, Check Engine lights were solid, Cruise Control light was blinking and "Er SS" (commonly misread as Er 55) displayed on Trip Odometer. All lights were cleared after 10 or so miles. It appears this is a Speed Sensor (SS) reading error whereby the computer notices an irregularity with the readings taken from the four wheels. Most often it is a temporary and harmless glitch and sometimes a result of debris that is impeding the sensor's reading at one of the wheels.

2005 Subaru Outback. Trip odometer suddenly said Err 55, cruise control started flashing, ABS lit up, and check engine light had come on. I noticed a day later that the regular odometer had frozen,

I found this under Fixya; 2006 Subaru Outback; there were 25 answers: The problem is not with an emission issue as you would expect with a check engine light. The ER 55 code on the odometer means that there is a loss of communication with the ECU, that is why the check engine light is on and cruise light flashing. for what ever reason whenever your check engine light comes on the cruise becomes disabled. Lame I know. I work in the service department and have seen this issue a lot. The only real way to fix this issue is to go the dealer and have them do a reflash for your vehicle. If the ECU is bad it is covered under the federal emmission wrty for 8 years or 80,000 miles

P0037 code subaru outback I have replaced the cat and both o2 sensors and the same code comes up

I'm sorry you spent that money if this was the original code.

The code means one of the O2 sensors has a faulty heater or the power circuit for the heater is bad. The sensor is not heating up as fast as it should. Since you have replaced the sensor you would need to check the power circuit for the heater.

P0037 SUBARU Description Oxygen Sensors (O2S) or Heated Oxygen Sensors (HO2S) need to reach a minimum operating temperature of 750 degrees F to produce an accurate voltage signal. The faster the heated oxygen sensor reaches that temperature the faster the sensor will start sending an accurate signal to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

In order to achieve the require temperature, a heater element is included inside the heated oxygen sensor. The ECM controls the heated oxygen sensor heater element based on signals from the engine coolant temperature and engine load. The ECM controls the heater element circuit by allowing current flow to ground.

The ECM monitors the voltage signal received through the heater element circuit and determines the state of the circuit by comparing the voltage detected with the factory specifications.

I have a1999 Subaru outback wagon, it was running fin last night, but this morning when we turned it on it started flashing the check engine light, then the light remained lit. The car sounds fine, but is...

Best thing to do in your case is take it to a mechanic and put it on a computer scanner to bring up a code # to detect the faulty part. The Check Engine Light usually represents a problem in the emissions system.

2002 outback subaru security light is flashing 2 times on panel.

I think the car may be set to valet mode. It's been a while so I don't remember exactly how to change it. If you have the key fob that is sorta square with an orange and a blue button I think you hold the blue button down for 3 seconds or until the alarm light flashes or something to that effect. Check your owners manual for the instructions or drop by a dealer and they should be able to show you how to do it.
