It's held down by one bolt right above the timing chain cover. It's next to the head that's facing toward the front of the car.

Hello fcdallas10: My name is Roger and I will help you. To locate the camshaft position sensor look at the front of the motor. Look at the area in front of the intale manifold and behind the water pump. You should see a sensor that bolts down into the front top of the block. This will be the camshaft sensor. The repair book says you will need to remove the power steering pump to gain access to the sensor. I would send a picture but the picture is larger than allowed to send. What are the probable causes of DTC P0340?

You'll need to remove your power steering pump to access the sensor. Remove the small bolt holding the sensor located right in front of the intake manifold for 3.5 and 3.9 engines.

Where is the idle sensor in the 2000 chevy impala

There is no idle sensor on the 2000 Chevrolet Impala, according to my online resource.

But, there is the following that senses rpm of the engine and thus the idle speed when the Throttle Position Sensor is at 5% or the accelerator pedal is not depressed:

Crankshaft Position Sensor Operation Engine speed is a very important input to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Crankshaft speed and position are the basis for many calculations made by the computer. Crankshaft position values are transmitted to the computer by pickup coils also known as Permanent Magnet (P/M) generators, Hall Effect sensors or optical sensors. The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) also known as engine speed sensor is typically located in proximity to the crankshaft.
In addition, the PCM uses the CKP sensor in conjunction with the camshaft position sensor to calculate and perform misfire diagnostics.
Related Symptoms
  • A No Start / Intermittent Start condition - Can be caused by a faulty crankshaft position sensor due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit.
  • Engine Misfire Diagnostic Trouble Codes
NOTE: Engine Mechanical conditions can also create the same or similar symptoms. (Don't overlook basic mechanical integrity).

How do you check and change a camshaft position

The camshaft sensor wouldn't explain the clattering noise. But a timing chain would explain both. Clattering from a loose chain and the camshaft sensor code from when the chain broke and the camshafts stopped turning.
