I just got a 1997 HONDA ODYSSEY LX. and it will not tell me how fast I am going or what I have gone in miles none of it works. I need to check the speedometer but do not now how to check to see if the...

more than likely the VVS speed sensor. Its on the top back side of the trany, under the throttle body. if thats the problem, they are around $50 or less new.

Here is a good website on VVS speed sensors. Its the same on almost all Hondas within the 90s, even on Acuras. So this sight will be valid on most its info for your Odyssey.

Replaced motor. Now speedometer does not work and service engine soon, service vehicle soon, and trac off lights are on.

Inspect your VVS (vehicle velocity sensor). The VSS is located by the output shaft of the transmission, in front of the differential. Since it is front wheel drive, it will be a pain to see, and access but it's there.
It will normally require a deep well socket for removal, and installation but inspect the wire leads first before replacing the VVS unless found to be damaged.

Speedometer acting erratic on 99 chevy cavalier

Check the VVS (vehical velocity sensor) "speed sensor", The vss controls shifting and cruise control as well as speedometer. If the Cavalier shift's fine and cruise control work, the it's going to be a good chance that the speedometer n the instrument panel may have a bad connection or the stepper motor needs to be replaced. Get a service book and attempted to check for voltage going to speedo cluster( at dash), to determine if your stepper motor is bad and replace the motor or the whole instrument panel.
Good luck and thank you for using fixya.

The gear on my Dodge Caravan is not switching

The Vehical Velocity Sensor (VVS) has gone bad or the wire harness to lead to the VVS has gone bad. It's on top of the right hand side extension housing of the trans-axle, accessible from the left rear corner of the engine bay. One bolt holds the VVS in place. First check the wire harness are seated correctly and also check all your fuse, (Under the hood and driver side dash); you may not even require a new sensor.
Good luck and keep me posted

2001 silverado 4x4 loud vibration at 50mph and speedo jumps around

Check your u joints and the transmission mounts. A worn U joints and worn Transmission mount can cause the vibration and can make your speedometer jumps around, cause the VVS is located at the rear of the transmission by the yoke. Good luck and check the VVS wire harness to make sure it's still tight and not damaged.

Speedometer does not work below 20 MPH and transmission does not shif right on 4 cyl automatic trans 2001 626

Check the wire leads to your Vehicle Velocity Speed (VVS) sensor, or replace the VVS sensor. it's located on the Transmission's out put shaft, on the trans axle, underneath the air compartment (air filter).

Speedometer doesnt work and it wont shift

Check the speed sensor again and make sure that the wire harness is not damaged in any way. Go to a Auto Zone and have them rescan the DTC codes and see if the VVS has gone bad from time to time in the history. Check the wire harness to the ECM on the passenger side in the engine compartment by the overflow tank. Make sure there are no damages to the clips and wires. Other then that it could be a bad sensor that may have been installed. Good luck and hope this helps.

Follow up question on my 1994 Acura Legend Speed Sensor

No that is not likely, if the VSS was doing this the transmission would not shift correctly, I am sure the issue is with the speedometer head, they can be repaired, you don't have to buy a new one, get the phone number of an authorized repair station form your local dealer.
