Transaxle ?
Sorry to say it has to come out & all the
transmission parts come out, to get to the
diff
When a shop rebuilds a transaxle they seldom
touch the diff, thus the bad bearings & the noise

Is it worth replacing the differential in 1996 ford explorer? idea on cost?

Pull the diff and inspect the damage. Provided that the damage is not on the crown wheel and pinion then bearings will be relative cheap and you are up for labour costs. If there is major damage I would consider a replacement unit from the wreckers.

1996 Ford Explorer Rear Gear Oil Fill Plug Location

Make sure to check all around the differential. Sometimes it's a rubber plug on the diff. Cover, or sometimes it is a bolt on backside (side facing front of vehicle) and it is a bolt with a square end in it that you would simply insert a ratchet without a socket into.

Upper front differential hose where does it go

It usually just gets clamped off in a spot you can't see , it is just the vent. If you get under there and look you will see a clamp with no hose on it, that is where it goes, leave the end open. Hope this helps.

ABS Light / Sensor on 1996 Ford Explorer

the rear one is a single sensor and is located in the top of the rear differential , unplug it and take the retaining bolt out and it pops straight up out of the differential. the front has 1 for each wheel, and is located on the backside of the wheel hub. take the tire off and look on back side of hub it should be the only sensor thare and is anchored with one bolt then just fallow the wire to its disconnect point. this vehicle is known to have problems with the rear sensor so i would replace it first and see if this fixes the problem
